I've installed AVG and Avast equally on different machines and not really noticed a problem with either. I think it's going to be down to personal preference.
Most recent lab tests I saw said that AVG was better at detecting but take all tests and anecdotes with a pinch of salt.

  • I use AVG. Make sure you download the updates at least once a week. I found Avast easier to use with the updates as you set it to update for you but the registration isnt so quick and it expires once a year.

I've had AVG installed for over a year now and no problems at all. I update it every day. :)

I've used the free version of AVG for years and never had any problems, or viruses.

Same here - I always notice that AVG does rather better than average on most reviews (even the free version is better than the paid-for versions of other antivirus programs).

Only had a couple of viruses, but AVG spotted them immediately (i.e. whilst I was using my PC, rather than during a manual scan). I was really impressed.

You still need anti-spyware software (such as Spybot and SpywareBlaster), of course.

Where have you seen these "I have a trojan and use AVG" messages, Donnie?

Up to you....I can remember at least five threads on this forum, of people asking for help with Trojans who have AVG installed.

Just do a search for AVG Trojan.

Just do a search for AVG Trojan.

This is why you can't rely on anecdotal evidence, the first one appears to be a false positive and you can't determine the individual circumstances. You also don't know the usage statistics to put it into a proper context and therefore can't assign any meaning to any correlation. Eg are there more AVG users than Avast? If there were a majority of Avast users would we suddenly see an influx of posts from Avast users with trojans. Far too many variables to make any kind of conclusive statement like "if you have AVG you are more likely to get a trojan". There also is probably an element of selective perception.
