But not, as has been pointed out, "easy" walking distance for young children (which is why I qualified "walking distance")
Older primary school children not such a problem, but I do think my point about popping round to friends easily stands.
It's just part of the whole picture.

Do you have any idea how slowly young primary school children walk?

Yes it is walking distance for an adult. It may also be walking distance for an adult with children and plenty of time.

It is unlikely to be walking distance for a mother who has to take children to two different schools, walk home, pick the car up, and then get to work on time!

I missed the fact that she had to go on to work.:o

2.1 miles is certainly walking distance and we are by no means lazy ,however, for a 4 yr old it is just a bit too long we have tried it on a scooter and halfway had a meltdown! with the housing market being so slow it wud takevus 5 years to sell our house anyway! will have a better idea in september! have already teamed up with a mum whose child will be in the same class to share lifts once they settle in.

my eldest dd has got a place at a top primary school, due to the fact i went, anyway because she has got in my youngest 2 kids will get a place.....we are looking at 11 years of someone in the household attending and i was thinking of moving within walking distance. we live 2.1 miles away currently. is this mad? we do need more space but the area has ugly expensive houses!

Is it a state school? If so, I'm afraid there is no guarantee the younger two will get in. Admissions criteria can change, and having sat on appeal panels I have seen all too many cases where siblings are not allocated the same school. Please don't make a decision based on the assumption that all the children will go there.

yes it is a state school and i know we were v lucky to gain a place, attendance of the pre school is 1st criteria, then those with siblings at the school, then parent employed by school then children whose parent attended.now we have one at the school our other 2 children willmeet the first criteria for the pre school this year and that should set them up for first criteria for the primary school,.i am well aware of criteria changing however siblings seem to be top of the list for all schools in the area and has been the case for past 20 yrs ,i know this because 17 years ago my younger sister gained a place as both myelf and our brother attended. for some reason address is well down the list 7th which is odd. i havent heard of siblings not going to the same school at primary level in this area, however,my friend lives on the south coast and she had told me some twins she knows were sent to different schools! wewould be very unlucky not to get the same school but to be honest all the local schools seem great and i wouldnt be overly worried.

I wouldn't move with that distance between your house and the school. We live 4 miles from school. I drive so it takes around 10-15 mins. We have walked it too on the very rare occasion, which took 1.5hours! But at least I know it won't kill us if we should ever have to walk there again.

    What a strange criteria!

The 2 primaries my kids have been to - attendance at the nursery class/preschool counts for nothing on the admissions, nor does parents' place of employment.

And I am :eek::eek: that a child who lives next door to the school would come lower down the list than a child who lives 2 miles away whose dad went to the school themselves!

i didnt intend to start a debate on entrance criteria as i know there are a lot of disappointed parents out there......on days i,m not working we might try a cycle to school, our current house is 1km from the girls and boys grammar schools and i work next to the high school so at least thats something i just thought it easier to live nearer primary as little legs dont walk far .thanks for all the feedback everyone.
