Sand in camera??

Had a camera for 11 months, used on only one holiday and it stopped working. Sent back to Cannon via Argos, told can be repaired for £80 due to sand in camera (camera only cost £100) or will cost £30 to get camera back unrepaired. Is this reasonable?, can so much sand get into a new camera?, do I have any consumer comeback? Did sign a form for Argos to send camera away but no mention of £30 to get it back unrepaired. Help!

If they say there is sand in it there will be sand in it, and you have had them spend time and money investigating it.
For future reference better dealing with a Canon Service Centre direct.0 -
1 grain of sand in the wrong place will stop it unfortunaty, not as bad with digital as less moving parts. Beaches are the worst place for a camera but we like to take pictures there0

If, at the time it was sent away, Argos didn't mention any cost for what happened if there was no fault, then I don't think they can now insist you pay £30.
Presumably it's not much good to you broken, although I'd be amazed if, having opened it up, they haven't just removed the sand anyway!0 -
It is a hostile environment out there. Sand ingress (and water) are the main killers, followed by dropping. My local Argos does have a sign at the CS desk warning that out of warranty repairs are chargeable, so I assume yours would too.
As you have discovered, it is cheaper to move on and buy your own replacement - perhaps if going back to the beach, putting it in a protective bag?0 -
Why on earth would you have comeback for sand into a camera?
How exactly could that be their fault?!
Warranty covers manufacturing defects. I'd love to know how you taking a camera on holiday and then being careless with it on the beach is a manufacturing defect.0 -

I imagine that as the fault is down to the customer they are able to charge for their costs.0 -
Easy, don't pay the cash I'm sure they will scrap it free of charge to you!0

But Argos also sent it off for repair in good faith that the camera was faulty - and it turns out it wasn't faulty, just damaged by the end-user.0

down to op this one and the choice is theirs on getting it repaired or just sent back unrepaired and trying to get some cash back on that cost by selling on for spares or repair to someone who is happy and able to do that.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
