Porting a number back to same network

I have a contract with Orange that is nearing completion, and I am thinking of buying a new contract from an online retailer (CPW) I have spoken to Orange and they cannot match the online deal offered by CPW, because it involved cashback that Orange do not do any more. And I want to retain my number.
So in short, my new contract and old contract are both with Orange and I want to retain my number.
Some threads on this forum have suggested that I can port my number to another network, and then get the PAC code off them - and give this to Orange.
So I have now chosen T-Mobile
I have ordered a T-Mobile PayG SIM and will first port my number from Orange to T-Mobile.
So my question is - will TMobile give me a PAC code without topping up, or does it require any minimum top-up before they agree to give me a PAC Code?
And if a minimum top up is required, which is the best network to switch to for this purpose?

the simple answer is no, you cant port a number from one contract to another on the same network.
what you can usually do is port your number onto payg of the same network then port it onto a new contract.
To do this, you will need to end your current contract first before porting to payg.
How important is it to have your number active ? because there could be a day or 2 where you might not be able to receive calls on the number while its porting0 -
T Mobile and Orange are basically the same company, EE and you may be better off porting to a different network.
Before a PAC code can be issued, the SIM will need to be active on and this will mean adding a small amount of credit and making a chargeable call.0 -
Which will be a tenner minimum to get you started. As Orange and T-Mobile are merging their systems, look at GiffGaff, Three, O2 or Vodafone as alternatives.0

I thought we could still port a number from Orange to TMobile using a PAC code?0

Not important at all. I don't have a problem if the number is inactive for a day or two.0 -
Is your phone locked. If it is it would need the temporary sim to work in that. And or in a 2 nd phone.0

I did this on 3 by porting to payg and then to new phone . There was some sort of delay about 24 hours but it all worked -did take a few phone calls.0
