Dangerous electrics

Hi all,

I paid recently to have an electrician check my home electrics as part of a house sale.
He has stated that there are two sockets wired into the main electrical feed as the fuse box does not have enough fuses to deal with all of the spurs.
Apparently I need a whole new fuse box and rewiring work which will cost £600 / £700.

Are there any other ways to deal with this?, and does this sound like a fair quote for the work involved?
The sockets are literally on the other side of the wall to the fusebox.

are you selling or buying. I would knock £500 off.

It maybe incorrect or just not upto the latest requlations (like alot of houses).

A picture of the fusebox may help

You could add an additional small consumer unit (fuse box) to accommodate the extra sockets. Do you know what type of consumer unit is fitted at the moment - does it have an RCD, split load?

If the only means of overcurrent protection for the additional sockets is the main incoming fuse, then this is not safe and needs to be remedied.

Can you remove the sockets if they're not needed?

Is there 1 cable or 2 cables going through the wall to these sockets.
If one 1 then it's not correct.

If they are spurs, I'd expect only one cable to be going to them. Nothing inherently wrong with that. I'd be worried if a spur had 2 cables, because that would suggest a spur off a spur, which is wrong.

Back to the OP, did you get a proper EICR report, or is it just an electrician just looking for work he can bill you for?
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

The cu is the other side of these two sockets.
I was thinking if there was only one cable thru the wall the the 2nd socket is a spur of a spur which is wrong, unless of course they are connected to a 15a fuse.

:T:That's the simple and sensible and MSE thing to do.

Would that then mean the sparky would certify the house safe?

Or are there already overloaded circuits?
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Thanks for the replies so far guys.
