Sounds about right. If the DVLA don't bring prosecutions themselves, they'll only know about them if someone tells them. And as it's not an endorseable offence, there's no reason for anyone to tell them about it, or for them to keep records if they are told.

You'd be better off asking people who are likely to know. You could ask individual police forces how many people they've reported for prosecution - though as it's not a recordable offence the numbers may not be in a readily available form. Or you could try HMCTS, though again it depends on the information being reasonably accessible - they won't send someone to manually go through the records of every magistrates court in the county to find the answer.

I have moved house and have a paper driving licence and I need to send my passport with my application, but I travel with my job. The gov.uk website says don't send your passport if you are likely to be travelling in the near future. That could be forever. Anyone know where I stand?

    thanks,
    Brian

Another factor they've failed to take into consideration, phone them and explain.

I thought if your passport was < 5 years old they could electronically lift the passport photo and use it on your licence.

Generally, I'd not be sending any important documents to DVLC, passports aren't compulsory so there must be a system for people without passports to get a licence.

I'd also keep the original licence as I've heard stories about entitlements going missing.
  • Despite the fact I think it's a rip off and unneccessary, I renewed my photo licence last month (6 months overdue), as I'm going on holiday and didn't want to take the chance that I couldn't hire a car with an "out of date" licence.

To be honest, it took about 10 minutes online. My passport was less than 5 years old so they lifted the photo from that.
New documents arrived 3 days later - pretty easy and painless.

Thanks for the replies, my passport is over 5 years old, so that was out. They will accept a birth certificate and a payslip, so that's sorted. The only problem is I won't be able to drive on my next trip - have to send old licence off, but my employer has said that will be OK.

    Thanks,
    Brian

If your licence was temporarily misplaced then presumably you could get a new one and change your address at the same time and for the same cost.

They did suggest that I "lost" it, but that would have cost me £20, the change of address is free (I think I've remembered that right anyway). Since I don't need my licence for this next trip, I'll just change the address.
  • I have just renewed my photo licence, three months before my 70th birthday. Despite having a passport which expires in 2016, ie, is seven years old, I was allowed to renew online, and the resulting photo card does have the picture from my Passport. The new expiry date is my birthday in 2016. Odd, as I assumed that as the picture is older than the five year threshold, a new one would be required.
