Aggh don't talk about cockerels! I think I might have to do the deed with mine as they start crowing from 2.00am and wake me up. I'm not a nice person if I don't get my sleep and just about reached the end of my toether with htme. I know its natural but I did tell the lady when I rehomed them that they might have to go.

Really early start today to get DD1 to the airport for 4.00am as she has set off on her big adventure to Thailand. They've had to spend 6 hours at Heathrow but just checked the departures and they're on their way. Going to be funny not having her around for 4 weeks. DS2 has already bagsyd her room!

DS! went to the the Yorkshire show for shearing and represented the college, he did ok. He's got some big decisions to make, he's been offered a job with potential accommodation and his 'own' lowland flock to look after. He's also got the chance to go shearing abroad. Thoughts on a postcard please....

Although we re-homed our cockerel, Ozzie, it was the neighbours who benefited most. The horse lady across the track has two hens and a cockerel, which are nearer than our chickens. That's where the UPVC windows come in! ;)

Seriously, the crowing doesn't bother us, but the brakes on the horse lady's ancient 4x4 are another matter. 05.00 today. :(

A flock & accommodation is tempting for DS, but he may only be footloose & fancy free for a few years before all the adult pressures come along. If the overseas jobs give a range of experience and a decent income, what's not to like? Plenty of time to be serious later.....

Well, our remaining chook is crowing like a good'un! She's still laying well though. :D

DW and me have been discussing what to do with her as its unfair to keep just the one hen but pressures from aged MIL, injured DS2, plus my recurring back problems make us chary at getting more atm as we are struggling to manage when I'm crocked. So we've decided to rehome her and she's being collected tomorrow to join a larger flock.

In the meantime two truckloads of softwood logs arrived this morning which we had expected to get stacked tomorrow/day after by barter arrangement. But willing volunteers arrived unexpectedly and all logs are now stacked in the log stores :j

I'd really like him to travel but I sense the thought of having his own flock is alluring.

Alfie thanks for the heads up but won't be speaking to her for the next 4 weeks. Hopefully the guides will keep them right.

    How are they housed, L?
In order to crow they have to be able to go on tiptoe, stretch their neck & throw their head back.
If they can't do that they can't crow.
Something fixed at the right height in their roost (not so low that they can't move around normally but low enough to stop them stretching) should do the trick.
If not a separate 'box' for the cockerel to sleep in works.

Hope all those who've been poorly are now on the mend.

    A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do ;)

We had a couple of bantam cockerels who were little s*ds for crowing particularly early. We used tea-chests (blast from the past. I don't think one can even get them now) which were laid on their sides & had 'doors' fitted to the front (what was originally the open top) so they each had their own private bedroom :rotfl:
It worked, though, as they couldn't stretch to crow but were totally comfy & could still move around inside. During the day they still had the free range run of the place.

Chicken house is done. It's taken three days and materials of around 90 quid. BUT! I am seriously happy with it. I don't know if they'll go to bed in it tonight, I'll know in the next 10 minutes. Pics to follow...
