I'd argue that most of the stuff in our barn has been donated, but I know some of it isn't in that category, and there's no denying that owning a place such as this is 'luxury spending.' :o

I used to console myself that helping Pete by slightly increasing his acreage was a 'good thing,' but I'm not even sure about that now. Last night I watched the huge machines at work, harvesting, and seeing those leaves one in no doubt who is making the most efficient use of the land around here!

If you planted your hedge just before the very dry period this summer, I expect it has taken badly due to the lack of water, lir. I know our new front hedge has needed constant watering. We have also continued to water our beech hedge, which is a couple of years old. Mind you, not many people have quite such a wealth of mole and vole runs under anything they plant as we have. :(

Thanks for the lawnmower details, rhiwfield. :)

We planted in the barefoot season....was it end of last year? Not sure now.....but not this spring.

They have been watered too, its near a trough, so easy to do. In the dry spell we gave them the lagoon hose.:(

If they are hanging on to life, no, not yet. Anyway, there are some months to go before the next bare root season is in full swing.

I bought a 'Handsworth New Silver' two years ago and stuck it in a pot because it seemed a bit small for the garden. All last year it put on growth upwards, but hardly any side shoots, so by this spring it looked pretty silly. I planted it out. Now, after 5 or 6 months in the garden, that holly is still looking leggy, but I shall keep it and see how it goes. After all, it cost £5. :)

Gosh I really am tired :rotfl: only managing 20 ish mins of work in the before sinking into the couch for a rest. I wouldn't mind if I was doing something energetic but all I am doing is planting some very small plants into pots!

    hello peeps

well ive had a lazy day... went into lymington lunch time as the "bournemouth mini club" had the top half of the high street shut off with old mini's everywhere...it was brilliant and packed..:D
it was all in aid of the british heart foundation. you could tell by the faces of my era folk that they "remembered the days of mini owning":rotfl::rotfl: all comparing and chatting. such a lovely friendly atmosphere.
they had a raffle which i duly bought tickets for. they presented trophies [1st,2nd,3rd]for best car or something then a special trophy for THE SPIRIT OF THE SHOW car. a super young lad won this and he was from WALES. [apparently he goes all over the country to events but was on holiday here with his family and was told yesterday of the event and just joined in.]
his mini was covered in stickers, welsh flags and allsorts.:rotfl:
i won a £20 car parts voucher in the raffle and i gave it to this young lad [no good to me] he was chuffed and beaming with his trophy :D
it so heartens me to see people from all walks of life having such a nostalgic/fun day. i loved it.:)

    my AWOL chook ....
i turn my back and its like steve mcqueen, up and over the bl**dy fence..:rotfl:

im waiting to bid on item on the bay and keep asking myself do i really need this......... yep...:D

fabulous day again here ..bit of drizzle first thing but im still having to water the garden...:( so mixed blessing

Ok, what would you do for them......feed them with anything, sing to them, stroke their aching stems? Interplant? Top dress with anything?

Got half of the front of big new fence painted...does't seem like much, but the sun only came out at four....

Earlier pint he afternoon we took down some old, old, old, post and rail in front of it that it had replaced. The nails were old blacksmiths nails. Then we carefully put four rails back up from a new gate post (ok, a sleeper from the barn we upended the week we moved in to make a gate post) to the old end post) to change the fence line to make a not quite right angle with the new fence. This has crated a new parking spot in the front, and a new wild flower border and by the end of tomorrow will look tiny bit neater out the front, without looking like a new fence, because its not. :)

Netting for a fruit cage, what do we buy and where do we buy it? It could be a winter job, but would mean us moving the soft fruit in the spring......

It was a gloriously sunny day all day today :D I got most of the pots done although I had to give up when I got too tired.

Interplant with something small would seem a good option... 'hedging your bets,' even. :rotfl:As you say, holly are not usually fussy so I doubt if feeding now will make much difference. If they die, then you will not be entirely naked, and if they take off, you can transplant whatever you interplanted. :)

In my tree/ shrub growing-on area I'm currently impressed with alder buckthorn and the teeny-tiny hornbeams, which are at last taking-off.

Something that isn't doing well is our hawthorn "Paul's Scarlet" out front, planted by the previous owners. We kept it, because we'd enjoyed one at the old house for around 15 years. This one's leaves are covered in rust and falling now, just as they fell early last year. :( We'll cut it back and let it do another year or two, until we're ready to landscape the front garden, then it'll be replaced with....err......something.....maybe a triple planting of silver birches.

No rain here. It rained last night though.

Decided to have a day away from the building site today, to chill out. Two minutes into a very sedate bucking bronco ride, son fell off. He's now in hospital South of county waiting on surgery for complex break to elbow. Feeling more than a little sorry about this :(

Better Days. We bought at auction and spent heaps doing up, but we want to be here for a loooong time. If you feel you must buy this, I'd be tempted to spend nothing, or the bare minimum on doing up. Don't be deceived by APs either. They mean very little, in my view. Crunch your numbers carefully. How much interest is coming on you savings, how much are two lots of sale & removal costs, selling costs, all the other many unaccounted for costs of moving. My OH likes to say: Cash is King :)
