I got a recent JVC DV camcorder with DV in/out and usb2 but all the software I have apart from the basic program that came with the camcorder wont read usb2 even the MS moviemaker 2 which is free. Using the firewire and all the programs that I have read the camcorder.
If you have firewire the leads are cheap I got two from here

Make sure you get the rights one (correct number of pins) for example
My PC to DVD recorder is 5 pin to 6 pin
My PC to Camcorder is 5pin to 5 pin
I cant be certain if this works for you as you may need xp drivers but I use Ulead Video 8 and Ulead movie factory 3 (just noticed 4 is now out)

Try the free try and see

Cant imagine why Pansonic would ask £100. I wonder what software they are supplying? can you ask. Also make sure you got the last drivers for XP, surely they will be free.

A Firewire PCI card and cable is about £15 tops (see ebuyer etc). The stills feature on some Panasonic dv-cams may only be xferable via a proprietary lead (I forget, TBH) and unless Panasonic updated the software it may not work at all.

Also. you might be able to trick the software to install by using 'compatibility mode'.

Hi Yoshii
Are you talking about still pictures recorded on the multimedia card?
I have a Panasonic MX8 which can record stills to an SD card which I can then remove from the camcorder and view the pictures via a card reader connected to a USB port on my computer. Card readers are pretty cheap and probably will be recognised straight away by XP.
You only need firewire if you are transferring video from the DV tape to your pc via the DV terminal (ilink) on your camcorder.
It is possible to record still photos to the DV tape so these would require firewire to transfer I guess. (I've never recorded stills to tape)
(Further edit)
On third thoughts I guess you are talking about getting stills from video and I guess you used to use the Panasonic personal computer connection kit which I think supplied software/cable so you could save stills via the D.Still Picture socket on the camcorder. I never ever bought this and have always just transferred video via firewire.
Slight correction to an earlier post, as far as I know firewire cables come in 6pin to 6pin, 6pin to 4pin and 4pin to 4pin flavours. Never heard of 5pin ones.0 -
thanks onzey

iwill call panasonic again asap and ask what software they are using. maybe even get a more sympathetic assistant at panasonic
i think £100 is outrageous .the sofeware disc should be free.
wish me luck and i will post any news asap

I wonder if the software is this.
MOTION DV STUDIO 3 SOFTWARE, looks like version 3 isnt for XP, therefore another program MAY do the trick. There is a version 5.3 I have seen which may be XP compatable.
Its on there web site

Get a cheap firewire cable as I posted link above and download a ulead demo if possible to see whether it works.

Panasonic cams have a digital still mode which, IIRC, can only use their funky cable. It doesn't xfer via firewire. Is this making sense to the OP ?
