So why would you get one over the other? Or do you get given both?
I was given both for my children (born 2010 and 2011), but I only have the short copy of mine. According to my mother she was only given the short one when she registered me.
My husband has a long copy of his as he applied for it a couple of years ago because his originals were lost when his parents died.14th October 201020th October 20113rd December 20130 -

My Mam said that she thinks that's the only one she was given too as far as she could remember.0 -

According to my mum, back in the dark ages (1970's) when I was born, you got given the short version for free, but could pay several shillings to get a long version too - my parents decided not to waste their money and opted for the short version.0 -

The dark ages :rotfl: Yes, I'm a 70's child too! So I guess that's why then. Was just puzzled as the OH who was born in the 60's has a more indepth one, and you'd think it'd be the other way round.0 -
If a child was illegitimate, the mother would often only get the short certificate because the parents aren't named.
On a long certificate, the absence of a father's name was a huge embarrassment.0 -
I only have the short certificate too (born 1969) and my mum said the same thing the long one cost more. Very MSE mum!
We did get the long one for our LO, I remember being told the passport office require the long one (that might not be true) so we have long and short.
I never thought of getting extras to send as proof to banks etc, always had the originals properly returned. We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0 -

reading this and your so right it was embarrassing back then to have no father named or 'unknown' as is the case on my long cert.
its about 10 years ago I had to apply for the long cert (always had short) for a job I started.
Now I do actually know who my father is (dislike him intensely but still)
oh and I too am a 70s child
So off I trot to the registrar and ask politely. pay and tell them I ok to wait for it.
Over comes this woman 20 mins later and hands me an envelope with the cert in and she says 'your father is not known'
Have to admit that because I needed it for job and knew who my father is I had not thought about if he was named or not
I was rather gobsmacked that she would assume that I cared and was bothered and why she mentioned it.
still to this day I wonder if she wanted me to shout and scream that life aint fair
just a funny odd story that I wanted to share with yous all
and for OP never hurts to have extra certs, as they never get cheaper:D63 mortgage payments to go.

I got two long ones, plus the short one, I think? Apparently not everyone will accept the short one, so it's worth having at least one long one. And even if places do send them back, sometime two places might want one at the same time, so it makes life easier.0

Blimey, we have only ever had one each!0

I have got the (free) short one for each of mine and one copy of the long one.. I have never been asked for mine though I only have the short version because my parents didn't pay for the long version.
