You only need to get 1, but having a few makes it easier if you like to get everything organised at the same time. I think I have 3 full ones and the short one.14th October 201020th October 20113rd December 20130

Get as many as you can afford.
It is amazing how many places have not returned the birth certificates we sent as proof of their birth.
Banks, passports, trust funds you name it they are dreadful at returning them!0 -
Make sure you get the full ones & i'd get a couple as banks etc are a nightmare at returning them.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

We only got 2x
The full one and a short one. So far the bank has photocopied the full one, and tax office has returned the short one.
I was thinking of getting a few like I did with our marriage certs, but decided against it as they can be duplicated afterwards if needed (although does cost a bit more)0 -
Wow,
I've only ever had one (short) birth certificate and that has been fine for me for the last 40ish years!0 -

me too - I've had mine (full) for over 49 years and never had any need for another one.
Likewise my husband and 2 sons only have one each and they've never needed a copy to my knowledge.0 -
This thread has got me thinking, so I've just got a quick question....We recently had to send off our both certificates as we are getting married shortly, the OH's looked like this http://www.edp24.co.uk/lifestyle/family-history/searching-public-records/birth-certificates-and-notices and mine looked like this http://familyfolklore.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/101-today-–-mabel-coulson-birth-certificate-and-photographic-evidence/ Why the difference? I was expecting mine to be like his with my parents professions on and everything. No biggy really, just puzzled as to why?0

I've only ever had 1 (long) & my husband has only ever had 1 (short - no birth parents details due to being adopted) but my daughter was given both long & short at her registration. No need for any more!0
