As Ben above says, it is far more important to be completely honest than have the perfect bank balance. Being in the armed forces means being exposed to military secrets, and that may one day mean somebody trying to discover those secrets. One major way to do that is blackmail, honesty makes it impossible to be blackmailed!

A friend was vetted aged 18 for a GCHQ job, before they even interviewed him, they already knew all his previous girlfriends, which of those he'd had liaisons with, where he drank, what he drank, how much he drank! OK, so not all roles need the same level of clearance, but this is just to illustrate that honesty is the most important thing!
