Audi A3 convertible

I would recommend checking the level of glass cover when doing a insurance quote, as my wife has recently purchased a beetle convertible and after owning it for a couple of months. one frosty morning the rear screen shattered. we thought this would be a simple call to autoglass to get it replaced but it is built into the roof and ment having the whole roof replaced. quotes from vw to do this were circa 5k. luckily we are insured with Aviva who have a no limit glass policy, so got the roof replaced through their accident repair centre for the cost of the glass excess and didn't loss any ncb. i'm fairly sure the a3 cabby's roof is made in the same way0

Having a look at this on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221237853841?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
I would be wary. As someone else has said, if its been written off its had quite a bit of damage. also you dont know how well its been repaired. It could be a botch job. Of course the seller will say its a pro repair.
I would say he buys, repairs, and sells the cars again after a couple of months. Nothing wrong with that, but hes out to make money, so may have cut corners. Also, theres no way hes risking 'giving' that car away so chances are he has a mate bidding it up to what he wants for it, so you might not get it for 'true' auction value.
The car isnt even due MOT, so you cant guarantee its roadworthy0 -
Ask via ebay what lead to the cat D damage and what exactly was repaired.
Cabrios are not practical for everyday use, the boot will be tiny and the back seat will be useless.
Are they? my wife has used a 350z as a daily driver for 3 years, she can do the shopping easily in that and bought home a green house in it last weekend.0 -
The car was written off at less than a year old with less than 800 miles on the clock, so the damage must have been pretty extensive since it was still probably worth the best part of £20k.
It could be a bargain, but I'd want to see a very detailed engineers report on it to ensure it was repaired properly.
Presumably, cat C/D write-offs need to undergo some kind of testing before they are allowed back on the road?
I'd also check insurance quotes, because they'll be higher than a non cat D car.0 -

I'm a motor trader and i wouldnt dream of buying that without an engineers report, even though i know my way around cars.

No. Cat D doesnt need any checks or tests to go back on the road.
Cat C has to get a VIC Test but this is just a Vehicle Identity Check which doesnt check the quality of repair, roadworthiness, or safetly.

Yes. Good point.0 -
If you look at the other item hes selling its a collection of audi bits for front AND rear.
Also, his buying history is for a lot of parts like intercooler pipe, oil cooler, "Make money buying and selling accident damaged cars" guide (i kid you not), headlights, dent pullers, etc.
I would definitely say hes buying, repairing and selling to make money BUT by making it very clear his name is on the log book hes appearing to be a gennuine owner of the car but in reality hes a trader masquerading as a private seller, thus meaning he can avoid his responsibilities under the sale of goods act.
So when something goes wrong or it turns out the car is unroadworthy or blows a turbo tomorrow because of a bad repair, then he'll be saying sorry mate not my problem.
I would definitely definitely avoid.0 -

My wife has a z4 convertible, and previously had an mr2 for 3 years.
I know various people who run them all year round.
How does she find the Z4? My wife is making noises about wanting to trade in the Zed, initially she wanted the Z4 but is now making noises about a 6 series Cabrio as the prices have reached attractive and affordable levels.
I will be making a subtle push towards the Z4M.0 -
Ignoring the CAT D Status, I have had ragtops for the last 5 years, Megane and Astra convertibles. Plenty of room in the boot, soft tops take up a lot less room than hardtop convertibles, and though not massive in the back, have sat 4.
I love them, wont be going back to a normal car any time soon.0
