I had thought along those lines but then thought, if the holiday was next week the balance would have been paid weeks ago

OP needs to refer to the Ts&Cs...that is where the answer will lie

wouldnt it also depend when the holiday is...it may be next week, there isnt enough info in the OP

I would have thought the holiday must be at least 8 weeks away if only a deposit has been paid, but your right we do need more information.

Someone I know was driving their car yesterday and had to pull over due to a problem with the clutch, after coming to a stop they noticed smoke from under the bonnet on lifting the bonnet they found a small flame which quickly engulfed the vehicle, Fire brigade wer called but by the time they arrived car was destroyed.Having spoke to his insurance co today it seems his insurance co are looking to get out of paying for the damage Is anyone aware of circumstances which would give them an excuse not to pay out for the above. The person regularly checked all of the usual items ie oil levels, water to radiator and wash bottle, tyre pressures, brake fluid.

My sister has got a problem, she booked a holiday and paid a deposit of £200,for personal reasons she finds that she cannot now go on the holiday and wants to cancel but the company she booked the package with say they want the full amount which would be another £800.Any advice would be very welcome as she cannot afford the full amount and just needs to cancel.

Just out of curiosity, are these two the same person ?

If so the holiday company may be sympathetic if they are provided with details of the car fire.

    Just a thought.

I would not expect the holiday company to refund even if the OP was too ill to travel as they would expect her to claim off their travel insurance

If the reason she cannot travel is covered by her travel insurance then she should contact them
If not then she needs to go by what is in the ts & cs

As others have said , it depends on how soon the holiday was due to start . If it was soon , she will probably have to pay the full amount . Does she have insurance . Perhaps it doesn't start until the first Day of the booked trip so no cover for cancellation

Insurance doesn't work like that-You are covered for cancellation from the day you take out the policy (I feel like I'm stating the obvious and have misunderstood your post though)

No you are wrong there . Quite a few people make the mistake of asking for their insurance to start on the first day of the trip . They are not covered for cancellation before that date .

Nonsense. Duchy is correct - you tell the insurer the dates you will be out of the country, but cancellation cover starts when the insurance is taken out.
