holiday company demanding full payment

My sister has got a problem, she booked a holiday and paid a deposit of £200,for personal reasons she finds that she cannot now go on the holiday and wants to cancel but the company she booked the package with say they want the full amount which would be another £800.Any advice would be very welcome as she cannot afford the full amount and just needs to cancel.

Sadly for her if she reads the T&C she agreed to, the company is probably correct

If she doesnt have it, she doesnt have it.
Usual letter, sob story, lost my job, granny died + expensive funeral etc etc.
I really doubt they will pursue this further than the normal " you owe us xxx amount" letters.
If they do, either pay it and go, or if you cant, you cant.

You do not get jailed for not paying a holiday.

Far too little detail to make informed comment.

This is the biggest worry here. Depends how far the company is willing to go for payment.

I'm guessing it is within the period where she should have paid the money.

It may be worth a letter saying x,y,and z - and hopefully it will do the trick. They may just give up after a few letters x

The problem COULD be if debt collection fees force the debt up further.

Negotiate, but if she owes it, pay it. I'm sure she would expect the same if it was owed to her.

Debt collectors would probably seize goods first. If she has a car they could take that as payment.

If she's lost her job, or has fallen sick she could probably claim via her travel insurance.

Otherwise, as above - try a polite letter explaining circumstances, but don't expect sympathy. They are a business, and she owes them money.

The issue here is the £200 a low deposit or the full deposit. If its the full deposit then she should be able to cancel and just lose the £200. if its the low deposit and the £800 is the rest of the deposit then according to the t&cs it should be paid. It also depends who she has booked with if its the internet or call centre they will probably chase the payment to the end, if its a high street store the manager may have a little more leeway on the matter.
