Out of curiosity, why is a new one pointless? Is the life expectancy of a new one no better than a refurb?

Suppose its dependant on the age / price of the car, pointless spending in excess of 1k on a car worth 3k.

  • usual renault bashing carp going on here.

the 2005 on espace is well built, not common for problems as renault tweaked the engine from 1999-2005 then on and used a better turbo and oil cooler, 2.2 unit sufferes less failures than puppy unit 1.9dci.

many bashing them here has probably never owned a renault or had a modern one 2005 on and jumped on the band wagon of others opinions so OP just iognore them.

turbo's fail like just in anyother application and manufacturers.

just because the turbo had failed doesnt mean its a bad car/MPV.

bought private so you really dont have any recourse but i would suggest phoning a couple of turbo repair shops, even some cylinder head resurfacing shops have turbo rebuild facilities in shop and have a 1-2 day turn around.

dont take a secondhand unit to a garage to fit WHAT? any garage will fit anything supplied theres just no labour warranty offered by the garage if it fails you pay double for take off and refit but the unit coming from a rebuild should have its own turbo 30day -12 month warranty with it UNLESS the failure was caused by the garages incompitance.

so OP, get on yell.com and rout through you local turbo repairers and cylinderhead resufacing shops and shop around for you turbo to be rebuilt some may have one on the shelf where you can just partex your old one for another rebuilt one and some cash.

If spending 1k on it kept it running anonther 5 years it might be.

I know it's usual to replace turbos with reconditioned ones and I'm genuinely interested in how long refurbished ones might last. The turbo in my car will probably go at some point...

Each to their own, lucky if i keep a car for more than 2 yrs,so i'd be looking a recon myself.

main reason for failure is oil quality many will just top up with cheap 15/40 diesel oil expect parts to last the lifetime of the car.

using a decent oil, doing specified checks not letting the oil go too low and changing out paper elemant filters properly (many fit them dry and wich shouldnt ever be practiced because by the time the oil drains the the paper element then onto other parts then into the turbo youve probably cooked the turbo slightly resulting in excess bearing wear).

a recon is essentially renewing interior part of the turbo and just using the turbo caseing of the old one, given a good clean out and lubrircated upon rebuild should last a long time with propper maintenance.

also checking the oil cooler (small looking radiator) for damaged (as they are situated either near the bottom of the car or in the front bumper, can be damaged but big stones and oil connection pipes can start leaks under pressure.

My last car was 4 years old when I bought it, and I kept it for 10 years. My current car is 8 years old but I'd like to keep it going for a good while yet :).
