turbo problem

Hi everyone I'm looking for some advice with a turbo problem I have. Basically I bought a Renault espace 2005 2.2 diesel 66k last week test drove it and seam fine no noises or lack of power. I then drove home 20mins and as soon as I reached over 60mph I noticed smoke from exhaust pull over and noticed a lot of oil. I took the car straight to garage and they say we need new turbo £1250. The problem is we can't afford the cost we bought the car to take kids to euro Disney and worried that we would have to cancel holidays which would really upset 3 kids. I have priced around garages and they all say same cost and looked into removing turbo and sent away to rebuild wondering if this would be possible and cheaper. Also would the guy who sold the car been able to modifiy the car for the sale to hide damaged turbo. Any help would be massively appreciated thanks noel.

Private sale? Sadly you bought it and its yours.

Turbo's can let go very quickly with little warning. Not nuch you can do to a turbo to bodge it. You can usually hear them whistle and whine before they fail.

You can fit a 2nd hand unit. But only do that if your fitting it yourself. DO NOT supply a 2nd hand part to a garage to fit.

You may end up spending more than taking it to a main dealer.

8000 miles a year in a family hack, but it's a diesel? First owner probably did a decent mileage, second or later owner probably did a much lower mileage and skimped on the servicing ("Oh, it's only done 5000 this year and oil is expensive") and a diet of short journeys and poor servicing killed the bearings on the turbo. That said, my Skoda ran its turbo bearings at about 80k miles, and that had been serviced exactly on the schedule and used exclusively for motorway commuting at about 20k per year. It happened suddenly, too.

If you don't know what you're listening for, you can miss an incipient turbo failure. Private sale, so you have absolutely no recourse unless the advert said "new turbo last week" or something equally unlikely. Turbo diesel with a worryingly low mileage for its age, bought privately. The bloke probably knew what to listen for, and you didn't. Expensive lesson.
  • These big Renaults can be money pits, hard as it is you might be as well to get the present turbo rebuilt by someone like Turbo Technics Northampton and then get rid of it ASAP.

Sorry, but you've been sold a pup.

Previous owner has most definitely known its on its way out and got rid leaving you to carry the can.

No choice but to get it fixed and either drive on and hope you dont get another big bill or get rid and buy a reliable 7 seater instead - these big Renaults are cheap for good reason.

It would be worth investigating to try and find out why the turbo failed in the first place before considering replacing it. If it's not had had frequent services with the correct oil the replacement turbo might fail quickly as well.

A new or rebuilt turbo will be expensive. If you can find a good second hand one and take it to a local garage they could fit it for about 300 to 400.

If you are good with spanners you should be able to do this yourself and save a few bob.

As the others have mentioned, if it's a private sale you are stuck with it. If it was reade you can return it.

NEVER buy a 2nd hand part and get a garage to fit it.

Blows up on the way home, They say thats nice do you want to bring it back so we can fit a new one like we said in the 1st place? We offer no warranty on the turbo because you supplied it.

The money you paid for the turbo and fitting will be money down the drain.

At least if the garage supply and fit it you have a warranty.

Had the same thing with a Renault megane, I kinda knew it was on its way with a turbo whistle,

I sourced the turbo from ebay of all places a recon unit with 12 months warranty, I contacted them first, they just require you old one back so that can be rebuilt, the new turbo cost me 240 delivered, and fitting was 200 all in but that was mates rates, i'd bank on 4-5 hours labour plus oils/gaskets maybe 300-400,

Buying a new turbo on a second hand car is pointless, a recon/balanced unit will do the job 100% mines now 30k more and going strong,

    Good luck,

PS don't drive it as the fins will be hitting the inside of the housing, like a jet engine those big turbine wheels scraping the sides, parts will break off and find there way into the engine.

Out of curiosity, why is a new one pointless? Is the life expectancy of a new one no better than a refurb?
