ps. I work in school office and would gladly receive food offerings but nobody treats us![/QUOTE]

The Ladies in the office at my boys school are thanked alongside the teachers- as a busy working Mum I couldn't live without you - who else is the person who phones me if my little one is ill and knows which number to phone first, who accepts school trip money on the last day possible with a smile, and you help me out with PTA stuff - a virtual box of chocs to you.

If you want to know what primary teachers think are the best and worst end of term gifts have a look at this link:

Thank you, chocs very gratefully received! I love my job, esp looking after all my little poppets when they're poorly and waiting for Mommy to arrive to collect them.

I always appreciate a thank you card or letter more than anything else. A pot plant is nice to have in the classroom. Tins of biscuits (or even a packet) go down well in the staffroom. Another idea is a mug-teachers have a thing about mugs. You need your own mug and a nice cheery one is very pleasant to have. Teacher's mugs have a very hard life !

 can I remind you all of the name of this site- I can't get it round my head people would want to give their kid's teacher a food hamper:eek:

MY DD's teacher gets paid more than me, gets a lot more holidays than me, works in a pleasant environment compared to the smelly factory I work in, and also doesn't even spend all of her week with the kids- they now say they need time 'away' from their kids- they are with them from 9 to 3 with an hour off in the middle, for crying out loud. They also have classroom assistants to help them.

Yes, I understand they have marking to do at night-time,preparation etc, but any teacher worth their salt will be organised and have kept previous years' preparation.

I do value my child's teacher and last year we got the teacher a little coaster with a very soppy message on it, and made her a hand made card.

This year's teacher will not be getting a present.Anyone who shouts at my child and also refuses to listen to her when she is trying to tell her teacher something important deserves nothing. I wish now I'd reported her earlier in the year. Maybe I'm biased after her having such a wonderful teacher the first two years?

:) my friends who are teachers say that alcohol is their preference!! but then one of them went all gooey (technically term, obviosuly ;)) over the cute cards that the kids had written to her!

DH teaches and red wine is his gift of preference every time:rotfl: He lots of chocs, which is kind, but usually they are cheap and nasty (yes I know that is ungrateful). Has also had rip off market diesel after shave and a shaving brush and old fashioned shaving soap-really personal stuff like that is well, a bit creepy really (and it isn't as if he is "some young thing" they all have crushes on:rotfl: ).

Otherwise real hand made or hand written notes/cards mean the most.

I'd like to see the teacher that only words 9-3 with an hour off in the middle! Which school is this because I'd like to get My mum a job there and I'm sure the other teachers want to work there too.

Teacher's work 9-3 with your child but that is just the tip of the iceberg. In my experience they spend their lunch hours preparing resources and hearing readers and dealing with children who are ill/misbehaving or need 1:1 support and rarely get to sit down. They have staff meetings and after school activities to attend and run. They have hours of paperwork and this is not just marking but planning and levels setting. And keeping the previous year's planning and preparation is nice in theory but in practice the govt changes the way that these need to be presented/written up every two years and of course this doesn't account for curriculum changes either. 'Time away' barely covers half a day to do this and that is when they get it as it's not always feasible.

Yes they get paid more than the average, My mother earns twice as much as me, but don't ever think they don't deserve it!

Last xmas I was approached by one of the parents, who was approaching everyone to ask to contribute towards a pressie for the teacher. A fiver would do I was told. They were going to buy the teacher next vouchers! Needless to say i didn't contribute.

I'm sorry, but I'd much rather sit my son down and let him make a thank you card. Why do we have to buy teachers gifts for doing their job? I don't doubt that they work hard - but so do I and I never get anything (and I don't expect it to be honest!)

Sorry Weegie. My point was not that presents should be expected but that teachers don't have such an easy deal as some people believe. Obviously it's a personal preference about presents etc and as many other teachers have said here the best presents are those that come from the heart, even a spoken thankyou is lovely and my Mum has a collection of home made cards for each year she's ever taught and still looks back at them and remembers the children fondly.
