Adding Vat

I recently took out a contract for £12 a month via mobiles.co.uk

When I log in to my online account the monthly amount shows as £14.40

£12 for the contract plus £2.40 in vat.

I thought the £12 would have been inclusive of vat. Is this the standard practice?

Depends on the tariff you agreed. If a consumer tariff then the VAT inclusive price must be shown. If a business tariff, then no - all prices are shown VAT exclusive.

It would be deemed sharp practice if a consumer tariff was shown as being VAT exclusive to make it appear cheaper.

It's not a business contract. It's pretty basic and repetitive, but the first bill covers more than a full monh so it IS more.

It is on the second months bill to, amd it clearly says vat £2.40.

From what I have read, you will be charged for 36 days on your first bill. It happens that 6/30 = 0.2, which is exactly the rate of VAT. Are you sure your "second bill" isn't actually for the month just gone?

Can you post what exactly your first two bills say in terms of the dates covered and the costs?

Also, what your confirmation email and/or paperwork say.
