Why assume the key was faulty at time of purchase?

It may not have been. Who knows?

The dealer may still make a goodwill gesture whatever, and it's the only avenue to try!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Or... the GF could just accept that she was an idiot to not make sure the key worked in the first place and understand that this situation is almost entirely of her making....

Why is it always someone else's fault? How about just taking it on the chin and understanding that we need to be responsible for our own actions?

You forget this is a moneysaving website not a forum to give a sermon to someone looking to save some money!

Here's a money saving tip then...

Check things are working when you first buy them... don't leave it for 2 years and then hope you can blame the original supplier.

How are your posts giving any help to the op.?

You seem unhappy that anyone comes here for money saving advice over the circs they find now.

Your advice with the benefit of hindsight is downright rude (don't suppose you would tell the op to his face his gf is an "idiot") and incorrect. eg. Many cars come with 3 or more years warranty these days.

So, someone buys a car with two keys and then doesn't bother to check if they both work until they want to sell the car two years later???

    Who to blame?

    Ooh, now let me see......

You are an !!!!. No better than a pathetic internet troll.
Your posts here are not helpful. If you read the full posts you'll understand no one is expecting the VW garage to just pay up, but that it might be worth a try (I modified the language I used in the first heated post in a later one). In the situation my gf was in most people would've done the same (i.e. called the garage who last week did the MOT on the car). No way of knowing that the key was the reason the car wouldn't start (she didn't knowingly use the spare, having placed both into the compartment in the log book for keys, and removed one at random to move the car onto our drive)

Just a note: Do not call my gf an idiot from behind your keyboard you little toad, I'd like to see you try saying it to my face.

oh the irony! Being told to get out more by some keyboard warrior who posts thousands of times on a forum, adding precisely nothing to thread, or one suspects to the planet. Well done on your bungalow though.

Look, the facts stand for themselves...

Your GF bought a car 2 years ago.

She was given two keys for said car.

She failed go ensure that both keys worked with the car... hence her 'breakdown'.

Now you want to get someone else to pay for her mistake.

Yep - you must be proud... so proud, you've decided to tell everyone about it on an internet forum.
