What do I do if a website changes after I make a complaint about something on it?

I don't want to name and shame at the moment or put up any links.

I emailed the owner of an establishment to complain that I did not get what it said on the website when I went in there to get a meal.

They emailed me back this morning saying that it said on the web page that I could not have what I bought the previous day.

I did take a copy of the website that day with the offer on there and this morning he has changed the web page to say what I purchased the day before was excluded.


I cant go into detail right now so I hope I have put my point across.

Is there anything I can do about getting a refund for what I HAD to buy in the end yesterday?

Ah but I bought it and ate it before I paid the bill. It was at that point I was told.

It would seem from the information that you've given that you didn't clarify a price with a staff member and that the special price wasn't on a menu. If the menu price in the restaurant was wrong and they tried to charge you more, I would refuse to pay the difference and let them take you to court for the difference.

If this is just a matter of a web-site being wrong, it'd be difficult to demand a refund. Web-sites are very often out-of-date in terms of pricing.

Continued false advertising is a separate matter which trading standards could look into, but it appears that they've rectified this to avoid future problems.

Thanks Lucy, It was only one part of a meal so no real biggy just there were 8 of us and I had to try stand my ground with the owner in front of them all!

What has annoyed me is that the website was changed this morning before he emailed me to say that particular exclusion was clearly on it yesterday!

If you check Google Cache or the Wayback machine you may be able to find a previous version of the page. If you're lucky it will be fairly recent.

I did save a copy of the website before the change last night to my computer, but like Lucy says there isn't a lot I can do, just find it a bit annoying today.. I'll get over it! :-)

Leave a review on Tripadvisor - that'll potentially hurt them far more.

No I don't think I will do that. Like Lucy said I should have checked with staff before we all ate it! I will do in future and now the website has changed so nobody else will suffer the same.

It was an excellent meal anyway and only a small part of it was excluded. I don't want to ruin a business, its hard enough staying in one at the moment!

The staff were attentive and also excellent..

Oh I don't think anyone thought I was a !!!!!!, they did have some sympathy for me and understood why. Anyway the discussion was very controlled by the owner and myself about what was on the website. No probs :beer:
