8 year old girls love nothing more than dressing up, singing and dancing. If they have watched High School Musical, they will be in a very performance mood, so if you still have time to kill get them to sing and dance. Splitting them into 2 groups of 3 and asking each group to make up a dance to a song is a great way to keep them occupied for ages. Winning performance will get a prize (but of course it will be TOO HARD to chose between so everyone gets one - a balloon, stickers, sweet whatever)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Do you know what, DS1 is 5 and i have been to a number of (soft play) parties this year where parents must have spent a complete fortune .. I always take DS2 along for a treat (obviously I check with the party parents first, and always pay for his own food) and then I sit there and see various children wandering around looking like lost souls and they all come over to talk to me ... I think we need to get back to 'basics' with parties and give children attention more than anything! And why do so many people insist on inviting the whole class??? The ideas that everyone has been giving are fantastic and will make for a much more enjoyable and memorable party.

I have had various parties at home where children have done things like decorate biscuits / decorate pirate hats / make paper chains, and they love it.

Its my daughters 8th birthday on 7th July and she is having a small party at home too. She is so excited about it, we are going to play a few traditional party games like pass the parcel but we have a playstation2 and an eye toy and the games on it are great for parties so we are going to play on that too.

I have bought plastic plates/bowls/beakers beacuse although they are a little more expensive than paper ones, I can reuse them for picnics or other parties.

I am not sure what to put in the party bags yet, but a stationary shop near us is having a closing down sale so I might get a few bargains there, maybe mini gel pens, note pads, a balloon and sweets always go down well although not very adverturous!

Ds2 will be 8 in a fortnight and last year we had a BBQ for them - sausages and burgers and then a scoop of icecream in a cone - Askeys do 21 cones for 99p. We just put out balls and scooters etc in the garden and they messed around. We had some games in reserve but didn't need them.

For party bags, I got some value power balls in Tesco in bags of 4 and just split the bag. Then I add 2 balloons, one lolly, one mini store brand choc bar and then a slice of the cake. That seems fine to the kids.
