Hi
We had a cinema party for one of ours in APril. As the film (High School Musical)was a little long for them to all sit still through all the way (they were all 6/7) we had a break in the middle while myself and 2 neighbours did the girls hair (bought £3 worth of bobbles and slides from Wilkinsons) which they could keep and painted their nails with collected pots of varnish from friends and the girls mums. We then finsihed watching the film, finishing off some popcorn and juice. the party bags cosisted of a slice of swiss roll (39 p one from asda) as the cake was to go round all the family the next day when the grandparents turned up, a gel pen (12 for £1 at the pound shop), a strip of stickers (50p from Wilkinsons for 50 stickers), and a mini box of smarties and ofcourse the hair bobbles/ slidesLBM 22nd February 2007 - Amount in debt £72,242.23:confused: one month on  £63,900;) 2nd month 60,000.09

I might paint all their nails, would be quite easy to colour them and then paint a little flower on their big toes! Think I'll needs some practise first and I would only do it with a few girls otherwise I'll get in a right pickle!
I think girlie fun is all they needs, not just lots of 'stuff'!

I think High School Musical is a great idea - I have cousins and kids of friends who are about the same age as your daughter and they all love it! :T One thing - now it is not so new, it is often shown on Sky or the Disney channel - do you have anybody who could record it for you?
Alternatively, try one of the free/cheap DVD rental deals that are around (haven't done this myself, but if you time it right, you could probably get an evening of cheapy "up-to-the-minute" entertainment and then cancel the deal before you have to pay lots!
).
Love the pizza idea. I suspect that they would love to make their own pizzas in advance at that age (I used to work with Brownies and it is amazing how many kids don't ever "cook" at home so it can be a really exciting novelty for them). Let them make their own in advance and then serve them halfway through the movie - a few slices of pepperoni and a couple of ham from the deli counter, chop an onion and a few mushrooms, add a tin of sweetcorn/pineapple chunks and you're away...! Alternatively, Dad taking orders as a waiter sounds quite cool, too!
Another thing I have done in the past with friends' children is to try for the "Ice Cream Factory" thing - buy some cheap ice creams (just vanilla will do, but add chocolate/strawberry if you can run to it) and add some sauces (strawberry/chocolate/toffee) and some hundreds and thousands, chocolate buttons, smarties - then sit back and watch them provide their own entertainment!!! :rotfl:
I hope your daughter has a lovely birthday - I'm sure that she'll love whatever you do for her.

we are giving my 6 yr old a t-shirt painting party next week, it was very cheap - 7 cheap white t-shirts from George, a couple of packs of fabric pens,
and best of all the T-shirts make up some of the goody bag!
for the food she want chicken wraps & salad not party food, (so they can be grown ups and make their own food), and pudding marshmallow mountain that will be a couple of packs of marshmallows, strawberry sauce and a big stickey mess0 -
I think a trip to the Pound shop would be a good idea....
They have a packet of cardboard frames with glitter, glue, stickers etc..i think there was 6 in each pack..they also have "craft packs" with loads of card, paper, stickers etc... a couple of packets of this would keep wee girls happy for ages, and again, whatever they made they could take home with them.
They also have loads of makeuppy & hair things for a pound along with loads of stuff you could use for party bags.
Good luck !!0 -
If the weather is good as well as the dvd you could have a mini disco outside in your garden, I would do this before the film to get rid of excess energy.
Home made pizza are such as good idea, make fairy cakes, homemade popcorn and anything girlie is good.0 -

I agree with the ridiculous cost of the Wacky style party and we have never gone for that.
My suggestion would be to plan it around a meal time so that they sit and eat at a sensible time and you don't waste money on food that doesn't get eaten. Keep it simple - say nuggets and chips - we go for the value versions from tesco. I usually give a selection with the invites and ask for replys so that I know how much of each to get.
Value Ice Cream with Treat toppings (or make your own chocolate sauce) then serve with hundreds and thousands/choc sprinkles etc.
We have had success with DVD parties. I plan to eat first so invites are 12 to eat at 12:30. They have nuggets etc followed by Ice Cream followed by Happy Birthday and cake but we don't eat the cake. Put on the DVD and leave them to it. I usually provide some popcorn, iced gems, mini cookies, pieces of apple, dried apricots, raisins, satsuma segments - whatever your budget runs to.
I hate party bags too so try and find presents from the 99p shop - I try to spend around a £1 each. In the past, I have found notepad and pen (half price from Woolies), selection of 3 nail varnishes (from cheapy chemist place in town), Shelley style doll (own brand from Wilkinson), craft pack (99p stores) which are wrapped in birthday paper or Tesco economy foil and given with a piece of cake as they leave.
8 year olds also love dancing. We have several disco style lights (ask for them as birthday presents!) so pull the curtains and turn on the music7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -
My son was eight in February and we had a small party at home for eight children in total. We had a superhero theme and they all decorated a mask when they arrived and then there were some colouring pictures for those who finished quickly. We then played some games I had found on the internet. When it was time to eat I put a DVD on and the ones who wanted to watch sat still while a couple of others played balloon football. We finished with a pull string pinata for which they were joined by siblings who had come to pick up the invitees0
