Sky multi room contracts...

Hi advice needed pls

My main sky box in the living room is on its last legs and freezes a bit and at least once a week needs switching off and on again.

Now the contract for that box expires on 30 June 2013 so you would have thought I could give 30 days notice to cancel in the hope I get a decent offer on the new 2TB box...oh no say SkY

I have a second 'multi room' box and the contract for that expires on 15 November 2013....on that date SKY say I can cancel....that's just the way it works with multi rom contracts.

Had a discussion with the bloke n the phone and I asked if I wanted another ' multi room' box, which actually I do then I would still not be able to cancel my main box !!!!

Example.....if I added a extra 'multi room' back in April then I would not be able to cancel my main box until the year after the 2nd multi room box.

Seems a bit of a con to me...

Are they having me over or should I try and call again.

Darren

Upgrading your service to Multi-Room has obviously entered you into a new minimum term contract.

You appear to be unable to even threaten to cancel your services anytime soon.

If all you need is a different box, then forget trying to "blackmail" Sky into giving you one and look on E-Bay where there are hundreds available at incredibly cheap prices.

I can understand the min contract for the new multiroom box but that should not affect my main box in living room ?

Otherwise I could be locked in for ages ?

If you ask for another multi-room as an upgrade and thus another 12 months contract on this and your "main" box, you should be in a decent negotiating position for at least 1 new fancy 2TB box for the recording functions.
Try and take the opportunity for them to make other concessions as you are in effect signing up again.
I have turned up regularly SKY HD+ boxes in car boot sales as well as the loads on ebay.

I think this is the best option in the Op's circumstance.

yeah ive seen ebay and car boot sales.

I thought SKY sometimes had issues in pairing a card with a box not directly from them.

No, you can buy the box anywhere and from anyone. The only problem is you'll obviously have no warranty should the box go wrong.
Card pairing is a simple process, but you have to inform Sky of course.
