milton keynes to great yarmouth..learner driver with full driver next to me, journey!

hiya all,

looking for some advice really please.
due to go on hols in 6 weeks time, hubby on sunday had a small fit whilst at home, he was sitting on the sofa, moved to the edge of sofa, slight streach and then feel to his right, falling to the floor and slightly shaking with his hands, this only lasted approx 3-5 seconds, before getting him back onto the chair.

called 111 and they told us to get to walk in centre within the hour, which we did so, saw doc there, and was told he would refer hubby to a nerologist specialist which the appt should come in couple weeks time, and to see our own doc on monday morning and told hubby not to drive until hes had the specialist appt and had all clear, or the not so all-clear. so to speck.

Monday morning came and we got to see our doctor, whom made the referral and said what we explained dont seem like a normal eplileptic type of fit, but dont drive until got all clear.

now so grateful this didnot happen while hubby was at work, and work have been really good altering his hours, incase he needs public transport, hes disabled and has motorbility walking probs, hence he so relies on the car so much.

now looked into cab, minibus , limo service to take us to and from holiday, ok we would be without a car during the hols, but we can live with that, but hubby feels i could do the journey, now im only a provisional, and hubby whom is a full driver will be sitting next to me while i drive, but im a bit nervous, as its over 130 miles away and the most ive ever driving one gho was about 30 miles.!!!

taxi, cab limo servis all coming back with the costs of around 500 for the return journey, this we cant afford at all, any suggestions!!

would you be happy for doing the journey if you was faced with this, its a big thing to ask and im scared, nervious and anxcious aswell.

anyone got any ideas about this please.
thankyou x

As a Lerner driver it will not be legal for you to drive on motorways.

I dont think "legally" your hubs can sit next to you if hes been told not to drive. Check this out first. In my opinion as a builder it doesnt sound like epilepsy. Sounds like a blackout though due to sitting up a stretching (blood thing) bet wishes to him and you . BTW its a long journey for anyone if your going to try it plan your journey well we have early mornings and late evenings .Have you thought of setting off at 4-30am Bedford-Cambridge -Bury st Edmonds cross country .

Do not put yourself and hubby in a stressful situation along with other drivers on the roads in danger. Hubby is not allowed to drive because he may not be able to act quickly or he may have another turn. What happens if he can't react quickly or has a turn when you are driving. You are already nervous? How about coach travel?

Personally I'd not risk driving - and (no offence) I'd prefer not to meet you on the road in the circumstances you describe. If your husband has been told not to drive, then by extension it means that he's not fit to supervise you - what if he had another fit whilst in the car ?

I'd suggest looking into going by train or coach - the people over in the public transport board wil lbe able to help you come up with the cheapest options if you let them know how many of you ther are and the dates / times when you are travelling.

Also, have you taken out holiday insurance ? If so, have you looked into whether in the circumstances you would be covered for canceling the holiday and perhaps rescheduling for some time later in the year ?

Another option would be to get the X5 bus from MK to Cambridge then train across to Great Yarmouth (via Norwich). Not a short journey by any means but an option if you don't want to drive.

The roads from Milton Keynes to Cambridge are quiet if you time it right (my hubbie does this commute every day!) but Cambridge to the coast are more difficult, particularly in summer hols/at the weekends.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

hiya, thanks for other ways to get there, but as my hubby has such limited walking abilities, we need to take his zimmer frame aswell with us, plus he walks with a walking stick and has week arms to hold anything, due to operations on them.

there will be me, hubby and 2 boys aged 6 and 12. so getting rather stuck!.

anyone know easy way from cambridge to great yarmouth, eg. quietish roads, countryside way etc.

I'm pretty sure if hubby can't drive due to this current medical problem, it's not legal for him to sit next to you as a learner.
How about doing an intensive driving course and passing your test in the next 6 weeks? this may work out cheaper. you are then definately legal to drive and then make the journey an adventure, part of the holiday, and take as long as you want.
