Waiting for our vendors to find somewhere

We were also in the same situation. Our vendors missed out on the property they wanted to buy, exhausted the market & were just waiting to see if any new properties came onto the market. We got the impression from EA that their criteria was narrow so we could be waiting forever. They were unwilling to move into rented, and after 5/6 weeks we told the EA we were keeping our offer on the table, but were keen to view other houses if any came onto the market, as a Plan B. I don't think the EA was surprised - in fact they sent us a couple of properties to view! - which didn't inspire much confidence. Fast forward another week, we viewed another house, offer accepted & we're pulling out of the first purchase today.

Be honest with the EA. Say you're not withdrawing your offer, but you want to keep your options open, and keep scanning for other potential properties to view.
