This is a tricky question to ask them. They claim that

74 per cent of your donations will go directly towards helping the most vulnerable children in this country. That means answering vital calls to our helplines, providing life-changing services to children and families, or working with the government to give children a safer future.

    http://www.nspcc.org.uk/get-involved/fundraise-for-us/getting-started/fundraising-faqs/fundraising-faqs_wda73380.html

However, they go on to state that they spend a huge proportion of that 74p on such things as Advertising, Education and so forth. These are really intangible. I am sure that, in their eyes, these expenditures are in aid of the little kiddiewinks but, to be honest, advertising just lines the pockets of the media....

Quoting again from the previously mentioned link:-

If you can be bothered to read the full report, (it will take you half a day), you may quickly come to the conclusion that at least 70% of the income received by the NSPCC goes towards supporting its own existence rather than protecting children.

    :(

Next time the NSPCC call, answer it, and advise them that you are formally removing permission for them to contact you by phone. Ask them to stop sending you letters too. Explain that you will not accept further appeals for cash, and they are obliged to put that note on your account and remove you from the call lists.

I did this after the fourth request for an increase in six months. Later, I lost my job, and had to cancel all my charity contributions, because I couldn't afford them. I called the charities to advise them that I was cancelling the direct debits. The British Legion were lovely, wishing me well in finding another job, and just politely hoping that I'd remember them once I was sorted. The NSPCC told me that I should cancel everything else but them, because they were more important. I was being mean in cancelling them, even though I had no money coming in. I shouldn't even think of cancelling, because children would be abused without their money!

I told the man to get stuffed, called back and spoke to the head of the department, made a formal complaint and I'll never give another penny to them again. I got a letter of apology, and nothing else from them since!

    1. They stoked the fires of the Ritual/Satanic Abuse claims back in the 1990's. Their pamphlet on so-called "indicators" of such abuse caused no end of issues. The NSPCC subsequently trained social workers to identify "ritual abuse", helping to spread the Satanic panic that led to unsubstantiated allegations in Rochdale and the Orkneys: This ended up in many children being separated from their families, exactly what the NSPCC should not be doing or supporting. A subsequent very expensive inquiry concluded there was no evidence for ritual abuse.
    2. They never seemed to pass up an opportunity to cheerlead for intrusive and anti-liberterian measures of large expense and little benefit, such as the Vetting and Barring Scheme which, following the murders in Soham of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, was proposed as a way to try to prevent people who might just abuse children from coming into contact with children as part of their jobs. It went even further beyond even the enhanced CRB check in this respect, and which tracked not just convictions, cautions, or even charges for abuse-related offences, but also suspicions and even reports on unusual hobbies or activities.
    3. Their actions when they misled the Victoria Climbi! inquiry in order to cover up their own errors.

Earlier today I got an email from Which about avoiding cold calls. It asks members for suggestions. There was one which I had never heard before. Someone had arranged to have an 0871 number linked to their phone line. He/she gives this number out when a phone number is required on a form. Since 2010 he/she has gained £160 in commission from 'unwanted' cold callers!
    Anyone on MSE tried this?

If you don't want a charity to call you

Don't give them your phone number and
If they do phone you, tell them to stop.

    Simple.

I don't do National or International Charities other than buying a few items in shops.

I much prefer to support small local ones where I know my contribution is likely to go direct without some Directer taking his salary cut out of it .

As for supporting people in other countries, we as a nation have been doing it for the 60 years I have been on earth. Nothing has changed, they still breed like rats and wonder why they do not have enough to feed their family on. Father fills his belly, then the wife and if the kids die he holds them up to the press to be photographed .

When these countries start to use contraception, go for vasectomies or get their fallopian tubes tied then I may reconsider.

It would help a lot if the various religions involved would stop saying contraception is against the faith while still holding their hands out for donations !
