Can I block these calls?

I'm on O2 Pay As You Go.

I've started getting calls from 'Private' number(s?) but no-one speaks when I answer. there's just silence. I suspect it's a cold calling automated thing.

Sometimes when it happens, they don't hang up and I can't use my phone again unless I switch it off and then back on.

Any way to block numbers that show up as private?

No. OFCOM (when it was OFTEL) mandated that there was no requirement for an ACR service as customers could always refuse to answer.

Depends on your phone type. There are lots of Android apps that can block private numbers.

This is very odd.

And does it really show 'private' not 'withheld'/'unknown'?

Yes, it shows 'private'.

A quick Google last night showed numerous people complaining of the same private calls but I didn't find anyone who had the same phone issue, as of yet anyway.

My phone is a Nokia 5800 so there doesn't appear to be much I can do.
