So, my boxer girl had an op...

...and has to wear one of those horrible cone things. She's been wearing it a day now and to say she's depressed is an understatement. I took it off of her briefly so she could eat her dinner, and she was a different dog, wagging her tail, wanting attention. I put the cone back on her and she's wandering round the house crying. I rang the vet who told me they could order me a blowup collar that would be in tomorrow and would cost me £28 plus VAT! I found the same one on Amazon, delivered to my door tomorrow for £22. I just hope the collar does the job, we have another 10 days of her wearing it before the vet takes the stitches out. Anyone got any help or advice to get us through the next ten days?

What was the op?
We brought one of the blue blow up kong cones off amazon for our lab x boxer girl when she had a major operation late last year, she was alot more comfortable in it but i was naughty and when i was 100% supervising her i would take it off, she never actually licked her stitches, think she was in to much pain!! So she was alot happier and comfortable without it on.
I always used to put it on her a night and when i wasnt there to constantly watch her though! not worth the risk of them pulling the stitches out!
Good luck

thats the one we have got. Alot cheaper than the one you mention above!
I reccomend that one, done the job perfect for my girl and alot more comfortable than the plastic vet ones. (my girl was advised to wear it for 3 weeks!)Lauren :hello:

She had an op on her 'nether regions' so its imperative that she doesn't even get the chance to lick and get at her wounds. The vet stressed that it was very very important that she had to keep the cone on for ten days. I'm a bit cross really, cos knowing how horrible the cones are, I would have thought that the vet could have told me that they could have offered a different method to keep her from her stitches. I could have got one in advance for her. I feel I've failed her......
Roll on tomorrow when the blowup collar arrives.0 -
I was going to say i could have sent you mine, you could have borrowed it should be the same size? Have you already ordered one then?
My girl had her anal glands removed
worst pain ive ever seen her in, was horrible.
Hope she feels alot better soon
My vet did tell me in advance how long she would need to wear a collar for so thats when i brought the blow up more comfortable one for her, no way was i going to let her have a cheap plastic one on for 3 weeks!!
P.S you havent failed her

Thanks princesspinky, I just wish I had known in advance about the blowup collar, I could have saved my girl so much stress.0 -

Hope your girl gets well soon, OP. It's horrible to see them ill isn't it?
I also found my usually hyperactive Springer was very subdued and depressed when he had to wear a lampshade (can't remember the right name, is it buster collar or something?). He used to just lie on the settee looking sorry for himself or go to sleep and tbh, although I was upset to see him suffering, I was also glad it stopped him bounding around and possibly opening up his wound (he had a deep cut with staples in it - boak).
I honestly think that without the subduing effect of the lampshade his wound wouldn't have healed so quickly.
edit to add:
just seen the amazon reviews for the blow up collar, it looks lovely and comfy, but from the reviews it seems that some dogs can reach their wound with it on, probably depends on the site of the wound, so don't throw the lampshade away just yet.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -

I actually agree with that, it is important that you get the right size or they can still reach! I originally got the XL and then swapped it for the L as she could still reach with the XL on!
She probably could have had the M size to be honest! If its too big and doesnt fit snug round the neck its not much use

I ordered the large one as it corresponded with her neck size, the vet said the large one would be ok too. I'm nit throwing the lampshade away just in case. She's just had a hour of wondering around crying and trying to get the lampshade off, and she succeeded! I have to go to work Friday for four hours, I'm gonna be frantic with worry about her.0

Wish I hadn't read this. My baby is going in to be spayed in July, do they need to wear one for that. Can't remember as it was so long ago my other baby was done. x0
