  • OK, so say somehow a McDonalds employee somehow managed to rig the machine to remember your card and debit the 20 quid 4 times a day for a month.

Do you really think they would be able to do it anonymously?

There must be umpteen crooks, with umpteen different ways of stealing your data and umpteen things to do with it.

If they haven't caught up with you yet, they soon might.

Are you going to cancel your house insurance because your house hasn't burnt down yet ... Probably not. So there we are ... better to be safe than sorry. :)

Exactly. £20 is only the max per transaction.

Your missing the point. They need the card for each transaction, they can't "replay" the data multiple times, each payment is a one time code generated by the card.

Secondly, trying to do 4 contactless payments in a day would request that you do a chip and pin transaction to prove your the owner of the card.

So the maximum you can lose is £80. Make it a credit card and its not even your money.

    You obviously can't read

"I look forward with interest to all replies from non-complacent people with their suggestions ..."

Luddite ? No. I work in IT actually. You know ... that modern, high technology stuff ...

No - you're missing the point. You're assuming they stick to the rules that you know.

Now you are beginning to sound like a bank - "not even your money". Oh, I supppose you just drop them an email and they hand the money back, do they ??

I think not. Why should I put up with huge amounts of hassle I don't need ??

I really can't see your point anyway. If you want to use your credit and debit card contactless, that's fine by me - what do I care ??

Er, no. It doesn't quite work that way.
This is an open forum - anyone can post.

But you are putting up with hassle that you don't need by changing your credit card provider just to eliminate a microscopic possibility of someone stealing your bank's money.

But each to their own I suppose...

PS Don't get Amazon or Barclaycard either as these are contactless. I think most cards are heading this way to be honest.

PinPads have tripwire mechanisms that would cause it commit electronic suicide if anyone attempted to even open it. The idea that a McDonald employee would have the ability to circumvent these is frankly ludicrous.

Ive just got the halifax to change my card back to non contactless.
It can be hacked and is being hacked, but the biggest problem is accidental payments you arent aware of which is what happened to me.I had my halifax card for a long time but the contactless feature wasnt actually activated.
At some point it became active and that was when i got charged for several bus journeys that i thought had been paid for by my oyster.

Now the other cards with this feature i cant swap for normal ones are in my wallet in rfid sleeves which will also prevent the hacking.

    Tinfoil hats are optional.
