Holiday destination advice needed

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me some names of a holiday destinations where I could combine beach holiday with sightseeing.

Such as Greek resort from where it is not too far to get to Athens
Or Italian resort not too far from Rome
Or Turkish resort not too far from Istanbul.
Or anywhere else

Cascais/Estoril are 30 minutes by train from for Lisbon. Sintra isn't too far and both resorts, which actually run into each other, also have excellent beaches.

Venice or Barcelona ?

Another shout for Lisbon. The city itself is a smaller and cheaper version of Barcelona. It doesn't have any beaches itself but there are several just a short bus or train ride away.

I spent an enjoyable week in Nea Makri which is near enough to Athens and other sites for day trips etc.
