    Obviously the thief was too smart to actually present the debit card in the branch. If they asked her why she didn't have it, she said it had been stolen.

    What she got from the card was the name of the bank, and probably the sort code and account number. Depending on the bank's phone security, she might then have been able to get a balance and some recent transactions by phone, in case they asked her that sort of question.
