Barclaycard pre-application check

I just got a reminder from Barclaycard that I have a good chance of getting their cards. [STRIKE]My Experian score is currently 899 "Good" [/STRIKE] (apparently no one wants to know that) and their pre-app check shows "Very good chance" for the Cashback and Freedom Rewards cards that I'm interested in.

Does anyone have experience as to how accurate this "very good chance" is?

Why do you insist telling us your meaningless credit score from Experian!

ITS WORTHLESS AND DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING!

PEOPLE WITH DEFAULTS HAVE 999 EXCELLENT SCORES WITH EXPERIAN!!!!!!

I didn't know it was meaningless...

It is simply a marketing ploy (and to my mind, a pretty mean one). You may be suckered into believing you will get a card, yet they retain the right to refuse you, totally contradicting the original letter which, in the small print, explains they can still refuse you.

Don't be fooled or misled - if you don't think you'll get one, or don't need one - DON'T apply!

I thought so. Thanks! But why would they want people who they know they are going to reject to apply?

I don't need the credit, but I guess my point is that I do want the card. Right now I spend a lot of money and don't get rewarded for it.

Whether it is worth the risk of applying and not getting it is the question.

What would this credit card give you that you want? Cashback?

Yes, failing that Freedom seems okay.

Do you think I would have a better chance with my current bank, Lloyds? Their Avios Duo card is good if you consider the bonus offer.

Well the bonus is very tricky to get, you need to spend £500 a month for 3 months (can't remember if calendar month or statement month) and the transaction needs to be visible on your account in the correct month for it to count. Then it depends on if you will be able to use the 15000 avios or not and whether it would actually represent a saving on what you would have spent if you didn't get the bonus.

Lloyds doesn't credit check you usually if you are an existing customer.

If you have no defaults or missed payments in the past 6 years I would try for a barclaycard with a backup plan, e.g. amex gold if you earn enough, or tesco

Apparently the premier duo card makes more sense because it offers both more bonus Avios (20,000) and more per £1 spent. Plus, provided Quidco cashback pays, half of the annual fee is paid for.

I have never defaulted or missed a payment - but I've only had a credit card for just over 1 year, and an overdraft for 2 years. So I probably am still high risk for them?

The plan to get you to apply is simple.
    1) You may genuinely qualify, and they have hooked a customer
    2) You may not qualify for the super deal cards, but they will offer you a more profitable card at application as an alternative - and they have hooked a potentially more profitable customer
    3) You fail at application, and they then sell your details or fwd you on directly to a 3rd party 'poor credit' card provider who pays a referral fee.

    Win, Win, Win....

If you don't NEED credit, don't be caught out by mail drop offers.
