Currency plan for holiday to Lanzarote

Hi,

We are off for 2 weeks all inclusive to Lanzarote on the 18th June :j.

I am not sure how much money we will need while we are there as hopefully the food and drink at the Hotel will mean we only really need cash for some excursions.

So, my plan is to change £200.00 to take with us, a small amount that won't worry the hell out of me to carry around.

Then, I was hoping that I would be able to use my Santander Debit Card to pay for any excursions that we want to go on, and to draw any extra money out that we may need over the two weeks.

Would really appreciate some feedback on whether this sounds a reasonable way of going about it, please.

Thanks.

Duncan

Halifax Clarity Credit card would have been a good decision to make but you've probably left it too late.

I believe the Santander debit card is quite an expensive way to access cash / spend overseas. But if you're planning on sitting on a subbed, eating and drinking at the hotel and visiting the volcano you probably could do it on £200!

Tip: pay for the excursions before you go, that way you don't have to worry about them once you get there. You can book from the links below.

They're the big three for Lanzarote excursions. I usually use the top two. I'd highly recommend the Teguise sunday market, and a tour including Timanfaya.

Also, if you need a car, https://www.car-rent-lanzarote.com are very good. They'll go to the airport or any hotel on the island, and everything is included in the prices.

Hmm, yeh I think you are right really. I do have a Fairfix card for a few years ago, I wonder if I should try to find this and think about using that instead of a debit card? The plan would be that when the £200.00 is spent, I would take out perhaps another couple of hundred .....

    Thanks for the reply.

FairFX would do, or if you're near London, pop into a Metro bank branch. Absolutely 0 fees abroad on their cards. Or if you can get one, Halifax Clarity would be good.

Watch out for many shops not accepting card out there though.

My solution would be get a stonking great wad of cash out, and split it between who you're traveling with.

The Santander debit card is regarded as a card from hell for overseas use. However, Lanzarote is part of Spain so...
All main adult bank current accounts (those which are credited with at least £500 per month) can benefit from free cash machine withdrawals in Spain at a Santander branded cash machine

Right, thanks for that, think I will do that, and then with the excursions paid for before we leave and all inclusive, won't need too much ready cash. :) Sounds like you have been to Lanzarote before, would you mind giving me your advice on the best trips to take for my family, please? My wife and I, and our 11 year old daughter and 7 year old son. Thanks very much.

  • depends where you're staying really, but the Timanfaya fire mountains are always good, teguise market is really good, the grand tour is good but a very long day for the kids. Things like the cactus gardens, if they aren't covered by a tour you do, it's better to just drive yourself there.

If you get the chance marina rubicon is great.
