Genuine or compatible ink cartridges

Is it true that you should only use genuine manufacturer's ink cartridge or is it ok to use compatible ones? I know that it would invalidate my warranty, but is that the only reason?

And also I've been told that compatible ones hold a lot more ink compared to the real ones?

I always switch to compatibles once the printer is out of warranty.

ive allways used jettec compatible cartridges and find they have 2x the ink and never had a oroblem with them , theyre half the price too of originals.

The printers I've had are pretty cheap - around £50. A full set of five manufacturer's cartridges cost about £50 when the printer was new. A set of compatible cartridges cost about £10, saving £40 a go.

So even if the printer broke after using two compatible sets of cartridges, I would've saved £80... enough to replace the printer and still have saved £30.

Now the printer is a few years old and I've probably saved around £300 on ink by getting compatibles.

Same for me, genuine for the warranty year then compatibles until I replace the printer.

Price of genuine ink is quite silly really!

To answer your question - You do not (in law) have to use genuine manufacturers ink cartridges (there was a test case a few years ago) - but if the compatible cartridges do cause a problem - you are not going to succeed with a claim against the printer manufacturer - unless you can prove that the problem is not related to the replacement cartridges !
Some (decent) compatible cartridge supplier will offer a warranty that covers any problems caused by their cartridges...
Most (Amazon cheapies) won't - so "you pays your money and takes your choice"
I would not try compatibles on Epson printers - since they do use separate tanks and nozzles - unlike HP - Where the whole lot is replaced in one unit
If the nozzles block on an Epson - you are up the creek - whereas if they block on an HP - You have simply wasted money on the cartridge !!

I've used jettec inks for years on my Epson RX420 also from Ink and Media, it has four separate cartridges and never had a problem,still going strong (touch wood!)

I have a HP all in one device and compatible cartridges don't work so it's OE for me but it all depends on the device....google your device and see if anyone has had an issue before you buy

Looked at the l;ink and the inks for my printer were expensive, almost twice what I pay for my inks from ebay, may well be cheaper for other inks though.

what total nonsense in bold, I've got a Epson sx200, i've used compatibles in it, for the past 4 years, works perfectly, and they where cheap under 80p each, i bought 14 cartridges, and i still have a 1 set left..
inkpower via ebay.. never have a single cartridge go wrong or ever had any problems with them.

If the nozzle blocks on an epson, just use the cleaning under in the drivers, or replace the cartridge with a cleaning cartridge.
But in 4 years, I've never had a blockage, and thats leaving the printer for 3-6months without printing.
HP printers are 1 of the top 3 expensive printers, when it comes to cartridges, even compatibles, Lexmark is probably slightly more.

I had an HP deskjet before my current Epsom XP-202, and the HP 5610 was constantly rejecting compatible ink cartridges. Since switching to the Epsom, no problems at all. Luckily I found a company that offered a warranty against any of its rejected cartridges. Also their refills come in 18ml sizes, which is a lot more than standard cartridges. I have tried their black and other colours with great results.
