Your contract doesn't 'end' in August. Your minimum term does. After that the contract continues on until you give 30 days notice.
It cannot cost more to cancel-the ETC should be less, or no more than the amount due on your minimum term.-certainly not more.
If you leave the account active then the incoming occupier may easily be able to use your account-you don't need a specific router. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I called them up and it costs far more to cancel it now than to just pay the next few months. SO my plan is to take away the internet modem box/router (whatever it is) and keep paying and then cancel in August. Does that sound good?
So what happens to your phone rental, if you cancel that so the new occupier can have a phone connection your broadband will cease as you cannot continue to pay for something that is not being supplied to you also the new occupant will be unable to have broadband if it is still being supplied to the number in your name until August.0 -

Shouldn't be a problem if new occupant pays to have a new line with number connected. The only difference will be an additional socket.
If they moved into the home when all current services are cancelled they would need to pay to have the line activated again regardlessAll your base are belong to us.0 -

So how much are you currently paying per month? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi Arizonawolf,
In terms of cancellation charges these are detailed here
http://help2.talktalk.co.uk/my-account-bills/there-charge-terminating-my-contract-early
This is depending on the tariff you are on and the remaining time in your contract term. In each case the cancellation charge is less than the Tariff+Line Rental for the remaining term.
