Ikea Kitchens - including fitting price advice

Hi
I was just wondering if people think Ikea kitchens are worth it. I am a first time buyer and need a new kitchen. I like the simplicity of buying range and getting it fitted but have been surprised by the cost.
In a relatively small kitchen, 2.9m x 2.4m, the cost of installation is around £2.5k. This includes
15 units (various sizes)
3 worktops
5 appliances
sink and tap
electrical and gas certficates.
Maybe I am being naive, but thought it sounded pricey. Could well end more than purchasing the good themselves.
Also, I wondered what people thought of the Ikea ranges. I read on here people saying to avoid the likes of B&Q and homebase. But is there anyone else in that lower end that I should be considering?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers

If you think that is pricey then you're in for a shock if you try elsewhere! Wickes would have £10k off you for the same kitchen no problem.
£2.5k including appliances, worktop and fitting sounds a good deal to me.
Have a look around elsewhere to get a feel for the market. B&Q / Wickes / Howdens (through a fitter) / Magnet / Wren etc. B&Q and Wickes do some really cheap and nasty stuff - their "takeaway" ranges - but their properly fitted stuff can be ok.
Kitchens are a con. Remember it is chipboard units with doors - they cost buttons to make. IMHO IKEA are the only ones who price them at what they're actually worth.0 -
oh right, cheers for that. I will look into what the other price at then.0

That sounds ridiculously cheap to me.
You should go and get a couple of other quotes, bet they'll be a lot more than thatHe who laughs last, thinks slowest0 -

Really? I had new kitchen from Howdens - cost of fitting including removal of old kitchen and disposal, replastering, electrics (including spot lights through out), tiled floor + subfloor , filling a serving hatch, supply and fit a new kitchen door and a skip was £4k. Removal of old kitchen and new installation was £1.6k. Did great job too.
Price seems reasonable bearing in mind certificates etc., is there any extra work involved - electrics etc.?0 -
it says quite clearly that the £2.5k is for the installation of the kitchen only0

That is a fairly typical big company warranted installation price.
It is more than a local independent fitter wold charge and no guarantee of a better job, though it should give you comeback if you are not happy with the finished result.
Wickes would charge similar for the install, Homebase, B&Q would probably be a bit more....
Get a quote too from a local fitter but get recommendations beforehand if possible.0 -
We have an ikea kitchen, it was fitted last year. It's been great
we paid 1200 for the fitting through a local installer, including the tiling and electrical, plumbing and gas work, all materials included. He did a great job and wasn't the cheapest quote we had.
Ours is a kitchen diner knock through - six appliances, sink, 13 units, four solid wood work tops including a large island.
We were quoted iirc 2.5k for the basic installation of the kitchen only, which quickly skyrocketed as soon as we needed plugs moving - to more than the kitchen! I thought our quote was shocking.
We found our fitter through one of the rated people type websites. He showed us a lot of photos of his previous work, so we had more confidence in him than the installers, who could give us no evidence of their workmanship.
When you get quotes, tell them it is an ikea kitchen as the units don't have service spaces at the back, so stuff has to run underneath.:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -

I did wonder. I will definitely look into someone more local, and thanks for the tips on plugs etc0
