Removals quote - Is it reasonable? (Manchester)

Hi,

I have a quote to move from the Bolton area to near Chester - 34 miles, that has come in at £1700.

Its for a 4 bedroom home going to 4 bed home.

I have a while till I move but I'm struggling to find removers I like the look of.

Anyone have any personal recommendations in the Manc/Chester area?

Does £1700 sound about right (Thats the price if we do the packing)?

Thanks,

Rick

Sounds extortionate to me. £400 sounds more reasonable to me..

Sounds a lot to me. We used these guys
http://www.amsmanandvan.co.uk/ £200 for one van load (so less than you I guess) to move a similar distance

    too many comps..not enough time!

It does seem pretty high - we were quoted £2500 to move the contents of a five bed house 200 miles in 2011 with us doing the packing. That was a BAR registered small family firm.......mind you, Bishop's Move charged us over £4k to move 150 miles once (pre-MSE) and we were naive enough to accept :o

I'd definitely shop around if I were you as prices do seem to vary enormously......

It depends what you get from the movers. Pickfords for example can charge a large premium, other local firms a little less...

Look for a firm with full insurance, get their terms and conditions (and read them!). A good removals firm will know others, so get them to recommend others and choose the ones you trust not necessarily the cheapest.

Depending on size of house, furniture you have, access at both ends and other stuff I would suggest a professional firm would be around £600 -£900.

Packing and all materials for a 4 bed house (again depending) would be £200 - £350.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. It did seem high to me but we do need a large van I believe due to the amount of furniture we have and access may be a little problematic at the other end requiring side unloading from a main road.

I did see those Chickaroonee and they had good reviews but it'll definitely take more that that size of van to move our gear. They don't seem to BAR registered tho.

I've seen 'Moving Everywhere' but they seem to be a collection of companies that organise moves so I imagine the service varies.

Another is Glaziers but I can't find independent reviews on them - anyone know them?

Cheers for the quick replies all - I appreciate it.

Is it a lorry (I.e a 7.5 tonne van) or a smaller Luton type van you need and have been quoted for?

A 7.5 tonne van will increase costs (different license, insurance, operators license etc.).

House insurance rarely covers removals unfortunately. Removals forms should havevGoodd in Transit, home insurance only works when either in or on the premises - and only then if you have accidental damage cover.

Rightmove has a selection of removals firms and ratings - check there maybe...?

And if you're moving on a less popular day (Tuesday to Thursday) don't be afraid to haggle!

    Hi,

The quote doesnt specify the van type but it will be of the larger type.

I didn't realise rightmove had firms on there with rating so I'll check them out. I'm away for a bit now so I'll check on them when I get back.

    Thanks again all!
