Why is bank mobile ins excess £100 for iPhone, £30 for others

I have a Halifax Ultimate extra current account. Pay £10/month for holiday insurance, mobile insurance etc.

On the mobile insurance it states that for iPhones the excess for loss/damage etc is £100, all other phones £30. Why? Is this "legal" some other phones that's it classes are more expensive than an iPhone, Samsung S4, HTC One etc. why should I have to pay more excess?

iPhones are more likely to break and cost more to repair.

The cost of repairing an iPhone is considerably more than repairing most other handsets.

9 times out of 10 they just replace the damaged iPhone with a new one, because of the cost of repairing is so high.

If you had to replace it yourself as you had no insurance then you would have to pay £529 just for the 16gb version.

So £100 seems a reasonable fee to pay.

I disagree a bit. They will all cost a lot to repair. You can get a service exchange to replace a damaged iPhone 5 in Apple for less than £200.

Why should it just because its an Apple phone have a higher excess than say an HTC One?

Yes, and it will cost the same £150+ at Apple for any minor damage.

If you can afford an iPhone, you can probably afford to self insure against theft, damage, etc. Insurance for low value items like phones is utterly pointless.

People are more likely to mess with their iPhone. Show it off. Be a plonker with it.

Like it or not, they do seem to be easier to break. So will generate more claims.

To be honest, I've never bothered insuring a mobile phone. It's usually out of date before the contract expires, many policies don't offer new for old cover so you end up with a second-hand reconditioned replacement and, as you rightly point out, excesses, postage charge and long delays tend to make me wonder what benefit, if any, my expensive bank account is really offering me.

Maybe it's because if people are silly enough to spend so much on an iphone that seem to be constaqntly in for repair, then they are silly enough to be happy to pay the excess.

I would never buy any apple product for the simple reason that you can generally get a similar product without the apple brand with better spec for the same price, or something of the same speca lot cheaper

I don't want to get into a "Apple" fight this is not my intention or reasoning. Just because I can afford an iPhone, doesn't mean I should have to pay more for an excess on a policy. I don't class myself as silly either just because I've got an iPhone.

I never take out separate insurance, it's part of my current account extras (also get holiday insurance which we use).

Other expensive phones like S4 which are £500+ will be just as hard to repair.

I was thinking something similar, however either the iThing has become cheaper or the competition has become more expensive.

CPW is currently flogging the iThing 5 and Samsung S4 on a £29/month tariff.

Interestingly, the Nokia Lumia 925 is going for £36/month.

Perhaps those aren't good example and I haven't look at tariff details.

Apple have been exchanging stolen "faulty" iPhones for brand new ones. This makes them particularly attractive to thieves.

14% of mobile phones are iPhones 28% of stolen mobile phones are iPhones.
