We have a washer dryer. When I bought it (well actually after I bought it) I had plenty of advice telling me that washer dryers were notoriously unreliable & break down more than the individual machines.
In actual fact I never use the dryer function - at least not after the 1st few times - and we have a stand-alone tumble dryer, because the dryer on the WD is really inefficient. And it makes the kitchen smell & get full of condensation.
So our WD hasn't had problems, but I think that is only because it is never used to dry. I certainly wouldn't buy another one though. I have to say that, used just as a WM, it is a very good one, so I can't complain about it (it is an Indesit)
As far as being eco friendly, of course it is always more eco friendly to air dry rather than use any tumble dryer. My experience is that the stand alone TD is more efficient that the WD one, as it takes far less time.
Hope that helps0 -
I have the Ariston Magarita the same as ur one - have had it for abour 4 years and never had a problem with it. Never had any bad smells or concensation, as it has a condensor.
it washes and dries 4kg which is enough for me and OH. However it does seem to take a long time to dry compared to astand alone, and I can't seem to get it to 'not' use the dryer function unless I stay in and 'catch' it to switch it off b4 it goes to the drier setting... any advice?
I think it's a trade off for you... space vs efficiency.. if I had the space I think I'd go for seperates. But if ur used to the washer drier then maybe u should stick with whats familare??0 -
I had a washer-dryer combi and only used the dryer 3 times! It was easier to hang washing over the bannister and doorbars when I went out to work and it was dry by the time I got home. Plus I felt good not using expensive electricity. Not so easy in this house though, and having had the boiler changed to a new one, I've now lost the airing cupboard for that little extra just-in-case drying. But we still manage using 2 clothes airers by the rads. No room for a separate dryer. I'd say if you can hang stuff outside or on an airer, avoid a dryer. Plus I wouldn't get a combi anyway - AAA rated washing may not mean AAA rated drying.0

Hi morganb,
You should get more help with this on the In My Home board so I've moved your thread over there. There is a recent thread on that board that may help:
anyonehave a combined washer/dryer?
I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the replies together.

Edit: Just found another thread from last year on washer dryers:

Hi - thank you everyone for all your replies.
We have taken the plunge today and bought a Bosch Washing Machine. I am a bit worried about not having a drier, but I am prepared to give it a go ... and hopefully will get into a system so that I am doing a maximum of one load at a time and able to dry on rack / line / radiators .... fingers crossed. I have just realised that i have only used the drying bit of the WD twice in the last year anyway as the dryer bit conked out last summer ...That's Numberwang!0
