Nelson had a sure fire way of curing mal-de-mer,
And if you pay attention, his secret I will share,
    To every sea-sick sailor he gave this advice for free;
If you're feeling sea-sick, sit underneath a tree.

Failing that ginger (biscuits/ale) can help, as well as the over-the-counter remedies mentioned above.

Best bet is not to worry as on the big boats you'll be unlikely to feel anything. Winter before last I was on the last ferry out of Dover to Dunkirk before they closed the port because of a storm. Found myself an armchair reasonably amidships, pulled up my hoodie and curled up and relaxed. Half the battle is being relaxed about it: tense stomach muscles don't help. When I awoke on arrival, all the kids that had been running around earlier were almost naked as they'd been half stripped of their fouled clothing. I felt right as rain although the visit to the loos before driving off was slightly unpleasant..

Although my wife does take a pack of sturgeon with her she has never felt the need to take one.

Just as well, they have a nasty, fishy after-taste.

Stugeron every time. A couple of years ago on a day trip to Guernsey there was a 5m swell on the channel and we were on a Condor high speed ferry. Compared to a 100,000 tonne cruise ship its a speedboat and was like a roller coaster ride.

All five of us took the tablets as prescribed and we were about the only ones on board who didn't see our breakfast again.

We had similar swell on a cruise last year and you could barely feel it on a cruise ship.

I agree that the big cruise ships are great and the weather has to be really bad before you feel much movement. However it is still possible to get sea sick on them. On a large Royal Caribbean ship it took me 24 hours to get my sea legs and then I was fine, although it was only a little nausea. However I was on a smaller Island Escape ship round the canaries and it was pure torture! I felt terrible most days and the whole things was like being on a ride at Alton Towers.

I too have heard you can get a fantastic injection on board for a small fee. Perhaps you could check this with your cruise line.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
  • I'm sure you will be fine on a cruise. I get terrible sickness on a small boat crossing, however was fine on a cruise we went on last year. Hope you enjoy it.

So know about the loo thing after a rough crossing bleugh :D

I swear by sturgean for rough ferry crossings. I've been really affected once and that was my first time to Ireland but I reckon that was because I was very tired probably hence why I felt so sick, but that time I didn't bother with a tablet and I wished I had :D

Also not thinking about getting sick does help, I've had rougher crossings since to Ireland since the one I've mentioned and I've been ok x

A lot of it is fear. I remember the first time I took the memshaib to Northern Ireland on the ferry. She'd never been on a ship before and turned pure white as we went aboard. Fortunately she felt no illness and has never reacted the same again.

Ive puked so many times with those grey bands on just the sight of them makes me feel ill!

The only thing that stops me being sick is Bonine but I always buy it in the US not sure what the equivalent is here. I've been sick after taking Joy rides.

    Heard good things about Stugeron.

We went on a small cruise ship from Cyprus to egypt and lots of people were being sick including me, but on a bigger boat I'd guess it would be better.

On most cruise ships Guest Services have OTC sea sickness tabs to give out (free) Also, for some reason, green apples are a sure fire cure which the crew swear by.
