It's all a bit of a minefield when you haven't done it before, I take it whatever I do I can keep my existing number, even if I move to another network?
Yes you can keep your existing number if you move to another networking. You get what is called a PAC code which you can request from tmobile.
using this you wont need to cancel the tmobile contracts, as using the PAC code will do this for you.

    Another question...
When I got this phone from E2Save, it wasn't locked or had any T Mobile branding on it, it just came sim free and they sent a T mobile sim card that I just had to put in it. Are they all like that? Or if I upgraded on T Mobile, would the new phone come with a big T Mobile banner on the casing?

networks usually get the phones direct from the manufacture, but 3rd parties source thier phones seperatly. Some network phones might have branding on them, and they are usually locked.
Less and less phones now are coming with network branding on now
But on contracts you can usually get them unlocked by the network for free.

3rd parties are often cheaper, but you can get deals with networks being an existing customer

I don't think it's the case for Orange/T-mobile. And you have to wait for several month before they agree to unlock even for £20ish.
