Converting 2 flats into house - STAMP DUTY?

Hello!
I have two flats - a 2 floor maisonette (got a residential mortgage on that) and a 1 bed garden flat (got a BTL on that)
Converting into a house due to imminent arrival of baby..
They are both leasehold (but have permission to convert, and ability to buy freehold if needed)
Current provider of residential mortage is up for giving me a new mortgage to cover value of both existing ones after conversion is complete.
Been told by conveyancer I have to pay stamp duty though. Any cunning ideas as to how I could avoid paying stamp duty?
