Transfering number to work phone

Hi,

I have a Orange phone contract which is finishing in July, standard 24 month one for an iPhone.

My MD at work told me that as the company is renewing their own business phone contracts in July, I'll be getting one as I am now on a perm contract with them. Something to do with tax.

I'm in the process of getting a house with my partner and it's probably the only way that I will have some "green dots" on my credit file (I have 3 defaults which won't drop off for another 3 years which I'm negociating full and final offers). We'll be in a state to apply for a mortgage in a year. Anyway, I've been told I need to port my number over to the work phone once I get it, but at the same time I think it would be nice to have some green dots on my file. My plan is to haggle down a low cost contract since it will be used sparingly if at all when my work phone comes.

How would I approach retentions when I call them up (I believe I have 5 weeks left from when I got my contract 2 years ago? Negociate and then ask about porting?

Thanks,
OM

A porting will terminate any contract that you wold or wouldn't be able to negotiate. You'll need a new contract as you can't port the number out and keep the old one.

Also, you can have problems with porting the number back to a personal contract in the future.

We had someone posting about this a while back.

He ported to his works acc (at which point you lose control of it). The company went down and all the phone's became the property of the receiver.
I can't remember now if he ever got it back? So think long and hard before doing this, only you know how well your company is doing??

    Great thanks Grumbler and Jon!

I'm quite comfortable with how well the company is doing, we've won some nice business lately so it comes down to if I leave which is unlikely. Having a new number isn't a biggy as it would free me from the calls from headhunters even tho I've been at the company for 9 months.

Just rang orange to get a 2nd line out and seems to have had no credit check. For what's it worth, £10 a month (1 month rolling) is no biggy for some green dots and as a money saver (Magic numbers). :)

    Thanks again,
    OM

Another problem with porting into the company is when you leave the company they will not be happy to return the number to you, especially if you are contactable by customers of the company on the number.

I really cannot think of one good reason to hand the number over unless you really don't care about keeping it.
