How to Haggle on a used car.

Hi all we are in the market for a used ford Smax and need your help on how to haggle with the dealer as the other day when I tried it I got no where.....

I went to look at a 07 smax titanium with 5300 miles on the clock, dealer wanted 13k for it, I wasnt prepared to pay anywhere near that.

plus he offered me a really insulting p/x price for my mazda 6(8k for a 60 plate 2.2 sport estate)

I tried to get him to up the p/x offer and come down on the smax by 2k but to quote his words" I can sell that car all day long at 13k"...so why has it been on his forecourt for 3 weeks???

Anyway back on topic..

We want an smax with either the 2.0 ecoboost lump or the 2.2 tdci lump with titanium spec.

Ive seen a couple of ecoboosts on autotrader and was just wondering what you thought about the pricing.

these two..........

Does anyone have access to book prices on either of these to give me an idea on what I should be looking at getting them for?

would you expect more of a discount on a private sale?

I'm crap at haggling but want to give it my best shot !!

cheers

Steve

You would most likely get a better price selling your own car privately and buying the new one with cash. This dealer saying he could sell the smax at that price all day long? in his dreams,Dealers are a lot like dangerous dogs,as a dog will smell fear so too will a dealer smell indecision.
I have bought a few cars and motorbikes over the years and have never paid the price asked,no seller whether private or dealer expects to get the price asked.Your biggest weapon is the ability to walk away,be polite when asking for a discount and if you do not get what you are seeking or very near then leave the seller with your telephone number, let them know/believe you have other cars to see and walk away.

No such thing as a private dealer.

Also, you said on another thread WBAC offered 9k and another car buying site offered 9.35k so the best advice is take the 9.35 and then haggle on the car as a cash buyer.

A couple of dealers have now offered you 8k for your mazda - i'd take the 9.35k.

    Thought this Mazda seemed familiar..

The difference to change is the important figure.

Best tip for haggling: do your homework and check prices.

Car buying sites always give a reasonable offer. Then cut it right down when they see the car.

Wbac being the worst. I,m curious as to weather the 9k offer was online or after them viewing the car.

    Thanks for the replies.

We have a private buyer for the Mazda at a Price that is more in line with what I am after for it.

We will be buying with cash or maybe dealer finance if it gets me a better price on the car.

If dealers are offering me 8k for mine and they are selling for around 10.5 on autotrader etc can I presume then that they will have around 2.5k Markup on any of the cars I am looking at?

I used to work in the car trade as a seller and certainly on our forecourt we were hard pushed to reduce by more than £250 because all cars had new MOT, new service and a long warrenty and the money had to come from somewhere..

With regards to your car, i'd sell it privately, no car dealer will give you top book for any car unless it is absolutely imacculate and has no miles on the clock, they're taking too much risk doing that, they are a business after all, buy cheap sell expensive is the aim so you selling it yourself just means they can sell you something you might not have been able to afford without them having to take any real risk. Alot of the time they'll only offer "CAP auction" prices and these being live fed from the auction house are a real reflection of what people are paying so they won't pay more than that.

with regards to getting his price down, as someone said it's the cost to change that's important not the price of his car or the p/ex price for yours obviously they both come into it but if you concentrate too much on one it will look bad and you won't get a good deal. But it is a a game of luck too I mean the car may be in for too much money and if he's selling cars at that price he'll have VAT to think of too so he really does need to sell as high as possible.

The trouble is you want a specific car, which gives him the upper hand if he has that car

People are not paying CAP price though are they, its the dealers paying that and then putting a markup on them then Jo public has to pay the inflated price.

The cars I am looking at are not that rare really,in fact there are quite a few smax titaniums about.

Its just finding the one that we like best.

    Cheers

not wanting to side too much with car dealers here but they are running a business. by inflated price you mean costs plus profits? yes it is annoying when you can't get something you want at the price you want to pay but at the same time why should a car dealer not make money because you want something?

Dealers pay CAP because they are buying to sell on, private buyers pay more because they are buying to keep, they pay less than they would at a forecourt and you get more than you would from a trader that's just how it works, you can't expect a dealer to give you private prices, there would be nothing left to make money on.
