Flight took off but had to return are we entitled to compensation?

Our virgin Atlantic fight heathrow to San Francisco took off in time 1100 but had engine failure on take off. We circled for just over an hour to dump fuel before landing back at heathrow. We were given vouchers for food, this was about 1 pm and told we would take off again 1600. Actually although we boarded at at about 6.20 pm it was nearer 7 pm before we took off. All in all we landed 8 hrs after due time having been up about 28 hrs, not the start to a once in a life time family holiday we wanted. Are we entitled to compensation as all the info i can find relates to delayed boarding and we did board as per the ticket time but had to return and then was delayed?
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

The EU flight delay regulations only refer to the how long your arrival was delayed, not take off time so you are entitled to start a claim.
It's likely the airline will claim an EC caused the engine failure and try to get out of it that way.0
