Car burnt out

Someone I know was driving their car yesterday and had to pull over due to a problem with the clutch, after coming to a stop they noticed smoke from under the bonnet on lifting the bonnet they found a small flame which quickly engulfed the vehicle, Fire brigade wer called but by the time they arrived car was destroyed.Having spoke to his insurance co today it seems his insurance co are looking to get out of paying for the damage Is anyone aware of circumstances which would give them an excuse not to pay out for the above. The person regularly checked all of the usual items ie oil levels, water to radiator and wash bottle, tyre pressures, brake fluid.
