We have been unable to use our debit cards a few times this week (money in the account) this morning I got DO NOT ACCEPT THIS CARD! if they were to close it would leave a lot of people without a bank account

But what has this got to do with the bank closing? Not had any problems with our cards, or accounts at all.

The point raised was if the bank closes there is very little choice for discharged BRs, if they have no money in the bank they cant honer the debits going out, they have stopped offering accounts to undischarged BRs and offered the best service to people like us. I for one am not worried about the money in the account it is all about where do you go from here should the worst happen. Barclays offer a cash account but you will be lucky if you get a debit card so you will not be able to pay for things online Nat west are not so friendly

IF...and it's the biggest IF anyone currently alive will ever see.....the Co-op decided to cease their banking activities.....the world will not end.

There WILL be a like-for-like replacement.

Lloyds bank customers are already seeing the effects of a 'closure'....by being transferred, like-it-or-not...to TSB.

In my locale, for a 40 mile radius, Lloyds customers are essentially being given no choice.

Co-op are basically doing two things at the moment.
[a] they are trying to force the whole banking community to shoulder their fair share of the less lucrative High Street banking sector.....and
trying to reduce their exposure to the low-profit areas of banking.

Personally, I think they were wise to avoid the Lloyds take-over.

Like Barclays, Co-op haven't needed pubic money to shore up their ailing business interests.

The issue of not accepting Undischarged BR's for Cashminder accounts wasn't about not wanting bad creditors....essentially there is little difference between before and after BR.

Co-op stated clearly ....they are trying to compel govt. and the banking industry to change their attitudes towards BR people as individuals, and adopt a more equitable policy.

In a way, Co-op are doing us a favour.

They are actually, now, compelling those in debt crisis....to start planning ahead.

Their current policy compels all those who are facing the prospect of BR, to get their heads, out of the sand, and start taking positive action in preparation.

Where is the problem in that attitude?

I am sorry but that is wrong, I opened a Barclays basic account post BR even though Barclays were one of my biggest creditors, this account came with a debit card, there was no luck involved. Also Nationwide do a basic account (although this can only be opened post discharge) this also comes with a debit card. People gong BR have enough to worry about without being worried about whether a bank will close or not?

    dojoman,

I think the issue of debit cards has being stated as there is evidence on the boards that barclays are now conducting full credit searches not just identity searches when applying and depending on this search giving a debit card or cash card.

As you opened your account I would guess some months ago may not be party to this new change.

I can understand your worry,if co op were to close or whatever I would actually be a bit stuffed, cant do barclays. I do actually still have my natwest acc and although I think it safe now ive done the br i do worry about using it,as did have debt with them.
