If you're still thinking of a 1.9 dci, have a look here first.0

Thanks dieselglider for the tip. Quite a technical site, I'm assuming there are lots of mechanics on there, but they are really great at solving the problems of which there are many with the Scenic.
I'm assuming the 1.9dci is a turbo - in which case I may stick with the petrol after having a read. What car would you recommend? I just need something big enough for bikes and shopping and isn't too ugly or pricey. Not asking for much am I?0 -
I do think the Scenic is a well thought out car, the amount of various cubby holes is great, and the petrol seems quite good apart from the spark plug coils (which are easily replaced).
The mpv of choice where I live, seems to be the Tdi version of the Seat Alhambra/Ford Galaxy/VW Sharan, which are all the same car with only slight differences. Although your 4-grand will probably only get you '97-'98 model, unless maybe a car supermarket, or auction house can sell you a bargain.
Then again, there's always the Picasso...

Must admit have thought of the Picasso....mmmm...choices.
We've got a local car auction at Chelmsford so maybe we'll give that a look.0 -
Also, not sure if I should mention the love-it-or-loathe-it Multipa with all of its six seats!
Again, the owners forum0 -
One thing i would advise you to check on scenics is the electric windows - the regulators are a very common failure on them, not particularly expensive to replace (around £55 from ebay) but a very common failure. Also on the 1.6 the exhaust manifold is prone to cracking and the coils fail quite often too.0

this is the second scenic we have had and this one has got to go the first one was a 52 plate and was fine apart from the coils the second one a 55 plate too many things have gone wrong to mention it must be a friday car. dont be put off we loved the old scenic but the newer type would not touch with a barge pole. we are looking at getting a jeep cherokee any problems anyone?.Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0

Rubbish!
I have just traded in my scenic sport Alize 112,000 miles on the clock ( absolutely faultless since the day I bought it) and Renault gave me £2500 part ex on a new one.
The 2.0 litre petrol manual is excellant, quick enough and smooth ,plenty of storage,ABS, power steering ,double sun roof, tinted glass all around, alloy wheels etc, loads of boot space flexability with the rear seats folding or removeable when you need your car to be a skip to take mattresses to the tip etc.
The air con was manual on mine but excellant,CD and radio were very good ,servicing is every 18,000 miles typically about £250 .
It was quiet at motorway speeds and can easily cruise passed the 70mph mark for lenghty UK trips.
I would reconmend it.
Good luck.
I apologise for my lack of experience with cars pal, however I cover around 60,000 miles a year in a selection of different cars; and Renaults, in my obviously "rubbish" opinion are one of the worst. My parents have a scenic and have had major problems. I have driven this car and compared to other MPV's I have driven they are low quality for the money you are paying. They handle poorly, granted they have a few, and I mean a few toys, but they are tinny, lack oomph (2.0 petrol model I have driven is slower than my misses ford fiesta!)
The Automatic gearbox was obviously designed on the first ever model of Auto boxes as it cant decide when to change gear and gets stuck regularly, even after being in the Renaualt garage on a few occasions the experts say - "that is how it should be"
Maybe it can cruise passed the 70mph mark, but you would need a few miles of clear road and a decent tail wind to get there at any speed!
Surley most MPVs have fold down back seats, or even removable ones, and again surely most have ABS in this day and age! Let me guess yours even had power steering!!!???0 -
I had a 2 litre petrol automatic.
Very comfy car but it drank petrol.
Electronic timing got knackered twice, causing car to cut out at low revs, very dangerous.
In it's last months Air con packed in.
For long drives it was great - took it on the continent a few times, but as I said heavy on the juice. Lots of cubby holes for the duty free.We all evolve - get on with it0
