Hi
Looking at XBOX 360 prices and nearly £200 for premium. I can also get a PS2 for £65.00
However this console is for my 5 year ols son. He loves DS Lite so I am tempted by Wii.
Any ideas, what I should choose. Sensible answer is none I know, but his restricted time will just divert from DS lite to new console.
Are there any games similar to Mario/Yoshi for PS2 platform or XBOX

For a 5 year old kid, I'd recommend the Wii.
Nintendo have always been the best option for kids in my opinion as far as game selection goes.0 -
I would go for a PS2 as there are so many games and so cheap now. We have PS1, 2 and 3. Downside with the 3 is it's new so games are expensive and nothing much out for kids yet, but some of the PS2 games can be used on it.One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
I've got a PS1 and a Xbox as well, and yes there are many games and yes you can get them cheap. But again, for a kid, Nintendo is the way to go.Are there any games similar to Mario/Yoshi for PS2 platform or XBOX
Yes, but you can count such fun/cute games on the fingers of one hand. One of the cutest game I have on XBOX would be "Conker Live and Reloaded", and believe me, you don't want your kid to play that. If you want your kid to drive cars at 200MPH between pedestrians or shoot hordes of aliens with an oversized laser gun, then by all means get a XBOX or PS. And if I had a choice to play between say "Curious George" on the Xbox and "Mario Sunshine" on the Wii, I'd take the later anyday.
Again, the Wii is designed for kids. In fact my gripe with Nintendo consoles is that because their controllers are specifically designed for kids hands, they kind of give me cramps during long sessions. Likewise, I can't imagine a 5 years old kid playing with the original full size Xbox pad (although the later version is better, it's still quite large).0 -
I have them all and I couldnt choose between them
The wii is great fun, multi player games waving remotes around is brilliant. the performance is fine graphics are ok. games wise the choice is limited its only been released for about 6 months. but the future does look promising especially for younger players nintendo has mario and all the games that relate to them and control is easy just like the DS.
The 360 looks awesome great graphics and sound and hdmi loads of games but it really is all about first person shootem ups. very few kiddy games unfortunatly. and dont buy sonic its pants. Lego starwars is pretty good though but thats available on the PS2 as well the control system isnt as easy as the Wii with 8 action buttons and 3 direction pads
The PS2 is a proven system, its been around for ages and has just been replaced by the PS3. there are absolutley loads of games available for it I am sure you will find some for your son.
good luck with your desision I wouldnt liek to have to make it. I also have the DS and its brillaint get him a R4 cartridge for it0 -
Sorry, I meant Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube. If you want a cheap previous generation console, I recommend the Gamecube.
As for the future of the Wii, indeed it is brightCheck the sales figures:

*EDIT* Nothe that since I'm not a kid, the last Nintendo I had was a Super Nintendo, so I'm not trying to make you buy the same thing as me because I want to believe it's the best0 -
i'd go for a ps2 plenty of cheap games around for it.0

For a young child I think the Wii is the best to have. Its great fun to play with. Kids will always want the latest stuff.
My nephew whos around 10 had a PS2 but sold it as its old for a (now Cracked screen) PSP . he now wants a PS3:rolleyes:
The Wii is new, Extremely fun to use and alot of the games are young kids friendly. oh and its the cheapest out of the next generation gaming consoles.
Funnily enough I played it the first time today and loved it. Also played the xbox 360 today aswell and the grahpics on that are great.
The PS3 is too expensive at the moment.0 -
I'd go for a Wii or PS2 for a young child. If he alread has a DS, then the Wii is a good idea because there should be games that use them both should you want to!0

Thanks for all the input
I'm drawn towards the wii as the games on the DS seem to be more child orientated and better (Mario Kart is much better than Need for speed on DS platform).
When talking about the graphic where does wii sit. I think PS3 and XBOX 360 are at one level then there is PS2 and wii. Is this about right.
Also I believe wii can play gamecube games. Does this require the wii to be chipped in any way? Is this a short term fix until games are released on wii platform? I assume a gamecube game on a wii will look no better than if played on a gamecube. Is a second hand game cube a viable choice, or are the graphics much worse than wii.
Thanks in advance to those in the know.0 -
The Wii will play game cube games as it is, we just plug a GC controler in and play I dont think the wii motes work for GC games. I should read the manual
The wii graphics are fine, the game play by far makes up for the lesser graphics power of the 360 and PS3. the wii doens timprove graphics on GC games0
